The Mountain
A warm sepia tone photograph
Noto, or the returning of the sword to the scabbard,
is a fundamental part of iaido (the art of drawing
the Japanese sword) training. The angle at which
the sword first meets the saya (scabbard) has been
referred to as a mountain. This angle is very important
because it protects the opening of the saya from
damage. It also makes putting the sword away much
easier. |

Katana and Saya
A warm sepia tone photograph
The Japanese
sword is truly an incredible work of art and
was a principal weapon of the samurai. So highly
was it regarded that the sword was said to
embody the honor and spirit of the warrior,
his family and clan. The katana, or long sword,
had a scabbard called a saya. This saya has
a wrapping of sting ray skin which increases
the strength of the saya and also adds to its
beauty. The tsuba on this particular sword
is in the motif of a gourd and the handle wrapping
is silk.
