I like to use the soft then move to semi hard Makiwari board, Knuckle and finger push, wooden dummy strikes, tennis ball sqeezes or the wire hand tools, bucket of cement on a rope forearms wrist and hand strengthen roll up and down, 5 gallon bucket full of bean thrust (don't use sand), taimeshiwari to perfect hand formation and snap techniques, Zheng gu Shui ligament oriment and heavy bag work for combinations and correct hand formation.
After years of this you can punch inside a watermelon along with 10" of concrete breaks, crush an apple with hand strength 1 sqeeze and finger tip break wood. The hand becomes a sharp tool w/o blood or heavy callouses. Don't forget medication!!
I don't know about loose hand strikes unless open hand looking for a whipping action.
