For the past three years, I have been practicing Jeet Kune Do, and have learned a lot and enjoy it's "street" practicality. I have seen the benefits, when I started to notice things. I have defeated Muay Thai kickboxers with surprising ease, then even all the way back to karateka. It's because of the martial arts I have mixed in my practice.

Anyways, I am thinking of seroiusly taking up Tae Kwon Do, I have already studied all the information I could find, etc. But one fear lingers in my mind--the brainwash factor. Jeet Kune Do has become pure instinct to me, and I'm worried my mind and actions would be confined and conformed to Tae Kwon Do. Martial artists who take their training as seriously as I do, I'm sure understand at least a little of what I mean by brainwash. Making a single art into your instinct. Maybe because Jeet Kune Do has always been my only hand to hand martial art, the others were all weapons training.
Martial artists with multiple Martial arts training could help me out here.

Why tae kwon do? I mean of ALL the arts, why that one? Where are you planning on studying it, in a strip mall next to a laundromat?

I would have you reconsider. Don't "fix what isn't broken".

I would be training at a place my sensei reccomends, he is a very distinguished and ranked instructor, and is friends with the like, so he would know of a good place, not a McDojang or anything.

I am considering Tae Kwon Do because I have always been interested in increasing my variety of kick techniques, and the other aspects of it as an art.

If JKD has been so successful and you are beating Thai Boxers w/ relative ease, stick with that. Also, if you like the JKD style of training, you may see TKD training as a bit boring or redundant. But hey, if that's what you want that's what you should do.

Good point.

Lets put it this way. How many TKD players could beat a thai boxer? i'm guessing about zero.

Its not the TKDers you want to worry about. Its the evangelist JKDers that piss everyone off!!!!

"We've seen the light!"

"Bruce Lee, God's second son!"

LOL!

Good Morning Chang Wufei,

<<For the past three years, I have been practicing Jeet Kune Do...

Have you understood all that "your" art possesses then? Three years is a decent amount of time, but its not 5 years, 15 years, 20... Meet an experienced practitioner of ANY art, and you should find skills and abilities to challenge you.

Who/what are you trying to learn to defeat exactly? If you defeat some Thai kick boxers, Judo practitioners, a Wu Shu practitioner or two... what will that information tell you?

Are you skilled... maybe. Why is defeating them (sic. all) your goal?

Merely a thought, and worth little...

Jeff

I know what your saying, but thats not what I mean. To paraphrase, I like Jeet Kune Do being a natural fighting system for me. My question is will the patterns and preciseness of other, more traditional martial arts, like TKD, interfere with that? Or can someone consciously "switch" between learned styles? The reason I don't know this is because of all my martial arts, JKD is my only hand to hand martial art.

ok if you decied to tak another martial art i wouldnt recomend tkd you will only find a mcdojo. i say you take judo because in most street fights or school fight it will end on the ground and with judo you will learn to defend yourself on the ground plus you learn joint locks and thowing. but to fuse them together you will after every time you learn a new move or a varition of a older one you know you have to sit down and think wich move will be better and them sitck to it.

It depends on why you are training. If it is for self protection then you will fight as you train.Taekwon do has limited value in this area. If it is for the artistic value then have fun. I think it is a mistake to train in multiple arts for self protection reasons. Ed
