Found whilst looking for something else - the source is tentatively cited as "Home Office Statistics", although no link bakc is given.
Habitual Acts of Violence: Male on Male, close Quarters.
These are listed in frequency order.
1. One person pushes, hands to chest, which is normally followed by the pushee striking first, to the head.
2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, one handed, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.
6. A bottle, glass, or ashtray to the head.
7. A lashing kick to groin/lower legs.
8. A broken bottle/glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lockblade knife or kitchen utility knife. (Apart from muggings, sexual assaults and gang violence, the hunting/combat type knife is seldom used)
10. A grappling style headlock.
Only one occasion of a well known boxer, caught on night club CCTV, opening the conflict with a hook punch to the body.
An interesting point was highlighted. Most fights, after the initial encounter, quickly degenerated into scrappy scuffling with head and waist grabbing and ended on the floor.
What I have seen a lot over time is the rushing tackle from close range (meaning, the guy started rushing from in close). It works 9 times out of ten.
That seems to be what most people do when they're primed to fight and aren't just trying to intimidate the other person. This is especially true if they are larger than their opponents and aren't otherwise trained to fight (even though is often happesn with those that ARE trained as well).

One thing I should have said is that these are for the UK - the FBI crime stats etc may well be different.

Looking at those statistics you posted, you would think we should really brush up on our two handed self defense techniques.

I highly recommend trying out the grab + butt and grab + knee - very hard to defend if done at anything approaching realistic speed.
Makes you think...

or in close range: cross punch or cutting elbow, as opponent tries to recover if at all, grab back of head and rapid fire knees into midsection or face, if hes still on his feet, push him away from the head and deliver a hard roundhouse to his lower legs and sweep him or take off his head with a fading roundhouse. unless he has a skull of steel then he should be pretty incapacitated by this point.

As a quick aside, does anyone know where to find US stats of this kind?

I liked the list. It illistrates why I love fighting street fighters. They have no idea how to fight. Winding punches are easy to intercept and break the attacking arm, same with the clothing grab. Just snake the arm and its broken in under a second very easy simple technique. There is no way a bottle is gonna hurt more than an Iron fist. There is only one sure way to come out of any fight feeling good though. Learn to like getting hit. Most street fights are cold fights. Your suckered, then you just have to Fight Fight Fight Fight.
