Haiku is considered by many one of the most important forms of japanese poetry.

Haiku is, a 17-syllable poem consisting of three units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Some recognised masters of haiku are Basho, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi and Issa. Feel free to add a favorite poem from a master or one of your own.

Teacher walks so slow.

Embers fall from trees aflame

Sweeping, his waist twists.

Pre 1850 or so it was common to find variations on the 5/7/5 meter. Most modern haiku works within the 5/7/5 structure.
