Kata done slowly and with one's eyes closed with breathing controlled and movements controlled is akin to QiGong and who's to say that meditation is to be done perfectly still.
One can "time out" any time during the day or night.
For me Kata is a relaxed state where one's mind is at one with one's body and the movements flow without thought or feeling just as natural as breathing
