A tragedy for sure for everyone involved. And also a sobering example of how martial arts aren't always as effective as people believe in keeping people safe:

A brief bit about his MA background:

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/l...n-29482300.html

Based on his location in NI, he would've been studying with the TAGB (Chang Hon TKD, off-shoot of ITF) and the World Ju Jitsu Federation (westernised version of traditional JJ), which the article doesn't make clear.

It is currently unclear as to what instigated the incident and who attacked who but regardless, it is still a tragedy for all involved.

Terrible news--but thank you for posting it.

IMO the most dangerous thing about MA training is that people all to often start to feel bulletproof--they often kinda of "hope" trouble finds them so they can use their training. Or worse they go looking for trouble.

My heart goes out to the family.

Very Sad news, not too sure about the full story as its only briefly provided but its not good to loose a Friend/Son/Brother
etc

And the guy charged, most of his young life will end up inside.

May I share this on other Forums I'm on too?

Yeah go for it man.

He was a blue belt with the TAGB (4th Kup), which would take about 2 years to get to. He had some experience with the WJJF but was mostly TAGB.

It always bothers me when clubs push self defense like crack when advertising their clubs. Self defense is something that has to be specifically taught. It isn't just a side effect of martial arts training, especially because a lot of places that claim to teach "self-defense" don't do any practice with resistance or have 110 lb girls practice on other timid 110 lb girls.

This has recently been on a my mind because of the women's self defense class that takes place before my taekwondo class. What they are doing in that class is not self defense, and it's just down right dangerous that the university is allowing this individual to push elbowing and kneeing someone running at you with a chest protector like it's self defense.

In any case, definitely a tragedy.

The article does not imply that his martial arts were ineffective. All of the martial arts/combat sports training and skill in the world will not save you form a punch you don't see coming.
