Just Wondering where have all the old school guys gone.

I've not seen posts like I used to from the likes of Brad (Butterfly) & Razorfoot and other well versed Martial Artists

I know we still have some of the old school here, but I'm becoming one of them by default. I know due to work load unable to add as much as I want but still logg on to see whats going

Wondering if the guys from old can just say hi on this thread and give an update as to whats new with them

For better or worse--and presuming I count as "old school" for the site.

Hi. smile

What I have noticed is that over the years the number of people with questions seen to have gone way down. And that seems to be the case for most MA sites these days.

Things go in cycles---even websites.

I miss reading the POV of the old school folks as well--Oldman, etc....... (TO MANY TO NAME frown )

With respect, I've heard the whole "goes in cycles" thing before and I'm not sure that's what this is. These forums have been in decline for well over 2 years now with no real sign of picking up. Heck, there are sub forums on here that haven't been posted in for 2-3 years (like the Pressure point forum).

Other MA site forums at the moment are positively thriving.

I can't tell you why that is happening, but I think there is more to it than being cyclical. I think one reason is that there are lot more specialist forums now online than before. Really good forums dealing with specific arts. So say a person is only interested in Aikido, Chinese Internal Arts or BJJ, there are really good forums for these subjects.

So I guess part of the reason for the decline on FA forums is increased competition from other MA forums.

It's a derelict site due to an absentee landlord and moderator neglect.

When I first came onboard, instructions encouraged me to observe for a while and if what I wanted to know was something specific that had previously been chewed to death, I could look it up in . . . . .

I just now tried to find where I could look and couldn't find it.

Does that give you a hint?

Prize

You may be right at that.

And other sites might well be doing a lot of traffic--right now. That might change over time.
My guess is that in 5 years time the sites currently jumping will look very much like FA.

Maybe we got too nice. wink

Sites that offer a strong exchange of views seem to do well in terms of hits/views. Might be we got a little to civilized.

Also possible that over a 10 year span people that used to practice have stopped. 10 years is a long time.

You might have really hit the nail on the head with the "style specific" point. Back when the site opened few if any styles were heavily represented on-line. Now days EVERYBODY seems to have a school-specific site. So maybe there is less perceived need for FA.

What can we do to help bring the site back?

Well, we did have a couple short ones going on "kata" and "bunkai".

They started on specialty forums in Martial Arts I don't practice.
But both are common to MA I still practice after twenty years.

It was interesting to see how other people viewed and defined both terms.

BTW in our iaido class we thought of "kata" as a physical example of all standard attacks and defenses (a catalog, so to speak).
And while "kata" were each a kind of playlet, "bunkai" were the playlet's script.

Forgive me, sensei, if my memory is off.

Folks

This thread got me thinking--the site ain't what it used to be--and has not been for some time.

Traffic is way down.

Is there anything we can do to help breath a little more life into it?

Any way we could get the "old guard" to come back and post more often?

Ideas?

Going to re-post this as stand alone.

Hi.
Don't know if I count as old school or not, but here's my two cents: In my case, it's just a question of the most interesting topics having already been discussed. And granted, there are MA topics ad infinitum, but the most interesting ones are gotten to first. And I've been a member here a looong time.
Every once in a while, I cruise by to see if anything interesting to me AND new has cropped up. Not for a while.
Don't get me wrong, it's not that intelligent discussion isn't to be found here anymore. It's that I can usually remember at least one thread where a JKogas, a butterfly or a JohnL has taken the subject on extensively (And, in the case of this last, has as a bonus had the entertainment value of his telling a deserving ignoramus that "You are clearly an idiot"!).

The "New Guys" is a different, though related, kettle of fish.
From what someone wrote, above, they seem to be there and are reading a lot. It's the writing and participating thing that's problematic.
I can't really think of a solution. There's years worth of good stuff to read here. I went back for the heck of it and pulled my posts, just to look over the threads I participated in over the years. I intended to spend 1/2 hr. at most. Wound up hooked and investing several hours reading.
Lets also not forget the bigger world out there. Some of the old timers may have been pinched by the economic times, or just preoccupied by other concerns. I keep in touch with Brad (butterfly) and the last thing we talk about is the MAs. His toddler, my teen, house improvement projects, family matters, etc. is what we discuss. And that's when we manage to find time. Life, my friends, life.
So I suppose the bright side is y'ain't dead if yer being read. The more so if there's at least some active discussion going on. I guess there'll come a point when the readers will absorb enough to start asking questions... Or not. Shigata ga nai.

P.S.: Just had a thought. Sometimes informed discussion by people who know their stuff can be very intimidating to those less knowledgeable. One of you guys was talking about a stand alone post. Perhaps in that post it would be useful to say something along the lines of "there's no such thing as a dumb question" and "jump in, we don't bite".

I just created a global thread inviting new people to submit any questions they have about martial arts.

There have been several people registering for the forums lately, hopefully that will get them talking and sharing.

I saw this post and thought I would comment as I haven't logged in for quite a while. The issue really is that asking questions and getting answers on forums like this is quite out of date. if you want to learn you go to YouTube (instead of trusting the word of someone you have no idea of whether they have skills or not). For a community, then there is facebook, meetup.com etc. I'm not saying forums still don't have their place, but it needs to be in conjunction with other social media.

Maybe try Using the forum to link it all together?

You might well be right.

I get the sense people really don't want to discuss much these days.

Honestly many of the topics have already been hashed out.

I also get the sense---in general---that people are being steered to their own styles facebook etc. instead of looking for independent, multi-style sites.

I think it might be an excellent idea to link the forums with other social media.

I'm afraid for this site if we advertise in something like Facebook that "weirdos" of the new age will come here and maybe learn a thing or two and use it for evil, like hurting people. Just a idea- take it or leave it.

Hi Guys,

In my case, I just stopped training. It kind of hurt to be involved in forums when I wasn't doing anything.

Just in for a flying visit now to ask a question on the Krav Maga forum... if it still exists...

Hey! joined the forums about 2004? I think my persona/role was a mix of instigator, comic relief and anti-fraud-google-estigator. I left the forums around '06 (edit: I mean 2009). I stopped training shortly after some health issues and coincidentally lost all interest in MA training. I've kept active, but just recently I started working out again regularly (joined crossfit). I've been more interested in building overall strength instead of pursuing the search for deadly technique in kata. (see what I did there? Set up a strawman to insinuate one can't build overall strength while training kata. smile )

don't worry, I'm not back here - just stopping in and saying hey.

I look in every so often, just to see if anything of interest has been posted, but the honest truth is that after several years of doorwork, (bouncing for our US friends) I came to the conclusion that the majority of what is said about Martial Arts is complete [censored]. That is not just from the traditional arts either. The majority of crap comes from the so-called mixed martial artists that don't realise that for all their experience in cage fighting it just does not translate to the street like they seem to think it should.
So there we are. Jaded and cynical with most MA related stuff and together with the fact that I am now so full of injuries due to incredibly poor training practices that I can only train very lightly and occasionally leaves me in the position of not wanting to engage in debate with people that only have dogmatic opinions based on what they have been told by an instructor with more than likely no actual experience of what a real fight is.
I do still keep in contact with one or two guys from here but via Facebook. Maybe a Fighting Arts FB page or group would be better.

I look in from time to time. And I agree, I miss the old group and all of the conversations that were discussed.

Haven't been here in quite some time. Haven't trained in a good long while either due to a lung disease i picked up overseas along with a host of other medical complaints that forced me out of the military 4 years ago. Just now getting back in order and training again. Doesn't seem like much is going on here these days though.

Sorry to hear that man.

I hope you are on the upswing.

Very little going on here.

I check back from time to time myself.

Sadly boards like this seem to have largely replaced with style/organization/dojo specific ones or Facebook.

Its too bad as people had a lot to offer.

But it had one heck of run. This started back when the net was really just a toddler and it kept going strong for a decade or so.

I will always be indebted to the people that gave so freely of their time, attention and opinions back in the day.

I am not old school by any means, total newbie to the site.

But it's been pretty ''dead'' for awhile. I guess a part of that is due to the fact that topics have been covered and repeated again and again.

+ MAs are terribly stubborn people in their beliefs so a forum kind of gets old.

I do not know if I "qualify" for your list of old timers?

I lost my primary job 2010. I have not been able to find meaningful employment since then. Had as many as 6 part time jobs simultaneously seven days a week but, not one achieved any measure of success, benefits, nor the ability to stay alive financially.

The teacher with whom I spend over two decades (unbroken) training falsely believed he was a "Buddhist Warrior Monk", of a SECRET (literally) tradition of the Terrence Dukes anathema. I was a primary teacher of that art and became so marginalized parents of long term students regularly asked was I not much senior to the people who were running and doing things? I was lethally marginalized.

My commitment, dedication were spat upon and worse, endlessly. I ignored the quirks, the ridiculous fraud for over a decade. When secret names, and pseudonyms became commonplace and then part of published publications in the mainstream press, I balked.

There became two tiers of knowledge, those who were "worthy" of the secrets and those who were not. Imported alien terminology chinese medical theory, snippets of Japanese which never existed before and had zero context of any kind. Superfluous and exotic to bolster their inclusion.

When the instructor felt it entirely appropriate and reasonable that he was capable to diagnose things having ZERO medical/clinical psychology degrees of any kind, and spread those inappropriate beliefs throughout the senior student body. I was asked to walk away.

I still practice, still teach successfully but never enough it is only matter of time. My wifes health is failing, as is mine. I am grim with abject certainty.

That sucks man.

Hope things will get better.

Bad teachers and frauds give everyone a bad name.

Thankfully they are a bit more rare these days.

Well hello, I was a regular a few years back and have just now been able to return. WoW!! Where is everyone? Maybe facebook and twitter has gotten them. Maybe, they all realized that Tae Kwon Do chain schools are the way to go and are just spending all their time at the dojang promoting 8 year old black belts. Just kidding. No offense meant to any Tae kwon do practitoners. smile. I am going to try and post more. I,ll more than likely be in the karate section or kata. It's going to be a minute as I prowse through the topics to see what's been going on.

It seems that style specific sites and sites tied directly to specific dojo's, dojangs, kwoons etc. Have become more popular.

So multi-style boards like one have been less and less popular.

Plus over the course of a decade people have other things to focus on.

I try to check in now and then. For old times sake if nothing else.

Well, I'm not quite old guard, but I'm the cohort after them. My absence was mostly due to military service. It took a lot out of me, and often I would come back from the field only to see threads that had taken off, with me having no chance to jump in. Now that I'm out, and 98% bat guano crazy, maybe I'll be able to join in again.
