Your instructor probably has a good idea what to work on with you, but it never hurts to work isolation training to improve a given skillset.

You can work striking by having a partner throw strikes while you defend or evade only, and then switch roles. You can work takedowns the same way - partner tries to take you down, you sprawl or underhook etc, then switch roles. Work escaping the mount on the ground/holding top position, taking turns. Lots of things you can do to imprive your skills before you start trying to integrate everything in full sparring.

Have fun wth it. smile

Work a good jab. Almost no one in mma uses one effectively

Hi Blue, Are you studying MMA or TKD or both?

Just confused as there's a difference to the sparring between the 2 "styles"

Thanks

I am studying both. I do TKD 3 times a week, and my instructor teaches mixed martial arts once a week.

In your ground work, focus on submission defense and escape (just basic survival). Roll starting in bad positions working to escape submissions and get to better positions.

I would focus on whatever your teacher is having you work on.

After it is no longer "new" then broaden out to other things.

You might want to be wary of practicing/introducing stuff your teacher has not introduced or cleared you for---people can get badly hurt with MA. Best to go slow and carefully. smile
