I have a 1st brown in DZR and studied under Herb LaGue.
Avoid him. He used to be highly placed in the AJJF but left/was kicked out. Many of his students left him because of his behavior.
I strongly suspect that he and his wife are long time amphetamine users. I know he is a weirdo from personal contact with him over a few years of classes. Imagine someone along the lines of Charles Manson/Jim Jones/cult leader personality. He was so weird that I left theAJJF for almost 10 years to avoid him. I came back when I heard he and the AJJF had parted company.
Frank Ferris at High Sierra Jujitsu, however, is a great guy, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He and his wife Cindy are great. They hosted the convention this year and I spoke with them personally.

I studied DZR under Prof Lague, as an ajjf member, in the 70s-80s at Sparks Judo and Jujitsu, later renamed Bushidokan. At that time it was an excellent school with exceptional instructors.

1) Genuine Okasaki lineage DZR jujitsu. Okasaki - Estes - Lague

2) Leaving or being kicked out of the AJJF is a plus.

3) The AJJF does not hold exclusive rights to Danzan ryu and the Okasaki lineage. They just think they do.
