This violent outbreak in their 30's could be something that built up, because as they grew they had their heads in books but saw that the other guys were getting the girls and having all the fun... I know that has to be fustrating.
I hear you man, us so called "geeks" have it hard. I'm glad I've been doing MA regularly for most of my life (as well as other things like weight lifting, surf rescue training, mountain climbing, jungle trekking, white water rafting, absailing and more). It gives me an outlet for my unwarranted and un-asked-for image.
Some guys who like to study/read/learn also look buff, are outgoing, keep fit and can pack a punch too if the going gets rough. I hate having the "geek" image forced on me by people who don't understand why I like to learn.
That said, I'm mature enough to deal with it without picking fights with people.
I've come to terms with the "geek" image and I'm actually proud to be someone who'se keen on learning and all the things associated with it, because it says good things about who I am. It's those narrow minded people who label us who should be ashamed of themselves.

it works the other way as well. I am shaved headed, covered in tattoos, and work as a security guard. i get stereotyped the other way . I have had no end of people admit to me, having known me for a while, that they were nervous of me when they first met me, and were suprised to find me polite, friendly and easy going.
I work among academics at one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and some of them clearly see the assistant staff (security, gardeners, cleaners, maintenance etc) as barely human, let alone worthy of conversation. It doesnt occur to them that I/we may read extensively, be bright enough to do anything we apply ourselves to, yet simply find happiness working in a less rarified atmosphere, with hours that afford a better quality of life. Nope, we are all just knuckle dragging grunts, there for the benefit and convenience of the intelligencia.
Sadly, us regular joe's have labels on our blue collars too.

'this is as close as you can get to a real fight-though I have never been in one'Yep, there is an endorsement you can have confidence in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bduh.gif" alt="" />
what can you do? part of living in the free world is that you are free to be stupid if you wish. I'm currently a software developer who worked straight through school, a physics degree and three years of terrible jobs. I took up a martial art.
It's the chap who said he fantasises about hurting people who concerns me. Any one seen "The Foot Fist Way"? Now that seems to be a typical McDojo there and throws up concerns about "Vetting" instructors especially in the USA. I think that if they want to go out and join a Club that allows them to fight, well let them. You can get "battered" in the 5-a-side "Soccer" games Its better than say a reinactment of the Infamous scenes from "Clockwork Orange" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWLByMshYIUor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-zRtT5jPLA&feature=relatedI think the "initiation" tasks that some of the College Factors have to go through is probably a lot worse than the "fight Club" OSU

I remember having a "fight club" in high school. I was one of the best. Thought I was the [censored]. Then I got with a real fight team finally and realized how much of a waste of time it was with the "fight club" in high school and how many bad habits I picked up. Not to mention how dangerous it was.
