What's up? I know the forums have been quiet for a while and there are fewer and fewer people posting. I'd swear recently a full 24 hours passed without anyone posting anything on here.

As a little experiment, I threw up a topic a while back to see how many people would respond. It was about MMA and the realities of violence. Two pretty popular topics on a MA forum I would've thought. There were 7 responses (which is pretty good for FA forums atm).

Now I'd actually pinched the topic theme from another forum and did a few minor tweaks and presented on this forum. The other forum that I took the topic from has had, to date, 229 responses. It is about the same subject. It was posted up on the other forum from the 29th of October. My thread on FA forums went up on the 30th. So they've been online on forums for almost the same amount of time.

Same subject, almost same online life span, yet on one forum the topic gets 4839 views with 229 responses, on FA forums the topic gets 473 views with 7 responses.

I'm not trying to be down on FA forums, (I think it's great) but any clues as to what's going on???

I keep wondering too. This forum was very much alive when I took a hiatus from it two years ago or so... Now it's but a shadow of its past self. I've been back for a few months, and can't start to imagine what depleted it like this. frown
I think someone once mentionned it had something to do with its front page's advertisement, which may cause the site to come up as "unsafe" on search engines. Still, I can't understand what caused its once-numerous regular posters to desert it.
A good job we still have a few hardcore posters like Cord, Matt, John, etc. to keep it alive. Without them, this board would just gather dust. I hope better times are ahead, because this forum played a significant role in my early martial development and I'd be sad to see it sink to its death.

I miss the fun this place used to be...

The problem could lie with the concept that (whatever the subject), it as been done before and the poster should look it up in the (whatever you call it) previous responses. We have an increasingly new batch of posters. Personally I have been on board for several years. Still I bump into this same philosophy. So no one of the newer group feels up to reading through a lot of previous discussion.
That was then. This is now.
Let them enter what they think is "new". It might just surprise you.

Sure participation will go up and down. Over the long haul, FA has been around for a long time. I wouldn't worry about dry spells.

Quite honestly, I walked away from it for awhile because of the way one of the moderators was bashing my every post and other people's as well. Then I decided that no one was going to intimidate me, especially since so few women post here. But upon my return I noticed it being much quieter.
Be nice, until it's time to not be nice.

I don't know what to tell you. I think everything has a life span, has ups and down. Perhaps this forum has run its course or perhaps it is the low before the high.

For me, posting on forums is at a low. Been there, done that, see that.

After 7 years or so posting here, I'm not suprised. It happens every so often. I've seen it go months like this (at which point I usually just lurk occasionally till it gets active again)...then pick up a lot...and so on. There is a cycle of highs and lows to everything. Just like Dereck said. Now, sure everything has been talked about and can be found in the archives, but I remember when there was that big loss of threads, before that there were tons, if they remained to this day there would be twice as many. It was active and slow at times then too when all those old threads were still around.

at other websites posters can get into full verbal brawls and really get into some tirades and rants. back when i was posting regularly on this site, if that happened a mod would come in and settle things down. kinda felt like there was not a lot of self expression.

thats not always a bad thing mind you, just sometimes people like to get into that type of thing.

i know in other cases on this site i watched as a poster would state his/her opinion and a mod would come on and disagree and just keep going til the other person stopped posting or gave up.

on many of the sites the mods arent frequent posters, just moderators. overall, they dont take an active part in the discussions.

overall tho, i like the site. but it does seem quiet from a few years ago.

I second the ff posts:

"...because of the way one of the moderators was bashing my every post and other people's as well."

"...kinda felt like there was not a lot of self expression. "

1. One doesn't want to displease the mods for fear that their account gets banned.

2. There are other forums that are more fun to join because the discussion is alive. M.A.planet is one of them.

That being said, I still, once in a while, come over here because there are topics not discussed in other forums.
