Can anyone explain why there are such extreme differances in Wankan between Shotokan and Shorin styles?

I've noticed differances among Shorin styles. But not that extreme as between Shorin and Shotokan. Shotokan's embusen is completely different.

Actually, the Shotokan were more similar than different & the Shorin-ryu, Shito-ryu & Gensei-ryu were fundamentally the same.

I say To-may-to & you say To-mah-to.

I did mean the differance between shotokan and the others. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear.

All I can say, is Shotokan is just "different" sometimes!

The only difference I've noticed is that my left hand is different than my right. Both are good. Just different.

I have to say that the non-Shotokan versions look a lot more complicated than the Wankan that I practice, although there are some obvious similarities in the techniques between styles. Also, I have never really understood why the eyes are covered after the knee strike as you step forward a couple of times in Shotokan wankan, as I was taught it anyway.

Resurrecting an old thread.

I've seen a kata called Matsukaze which looks more like the Wankan I know then Shotokan's Wankan.

Very confusing these names?!

I know this is a serious discussion but I can help giigling like a school girl at the name blush

I can see it now:
Two black belts meet at a dojo
The first says to the second: "so what have you been doing all weekend?"

The second replies: "I've been practicing my wankan".

The first says: "Geez, I've been doing that since I was 13, how much practice do you need to get it right." grin

sorry if I offended anyone
