I believe this has been discussed before, but it would be interesting to get new members opinion, or hear the opinion of forum veterans (whose ideas of why they train may have changed).
So, why do you?

These days, it's purely fitness. Lots of yoga (some pilates too) running, weights (not as much as I use to due to other demands). Doing some neijia training and recreational Judo once a week, again for health reasons.

I train, just like when I started, to be physically active. The karate-training I do challanges me physically aswell as mentally. For me it's a great combination. Next to this I do some running and hiking to train endurance.

For fitness, to keep a healthy mind set, and not to be afraid if I was walking in the dark.

Like PW, mostly fitness at this point. My real self defense comes from living in a decent neighborhood and not doing dumb sh1t anymore. Also, I enjoy it, and it's a great stress reliever. When I can't punch a customer at work, or some jackass on the road, I go home and hit the heavy bag.

When I was younger---self-defense. Then when I stopped hanging out in dodgy bars and with sketchy people....more for fitness/health Now I train because I enjoy doing it. I'm a better "me" because of my practice. I hope.

Gotta keep moving. I am no longer young enough to fudge it. Four Aikido classes a week, two to learn how, two traditional for fun. And occasional Iaido visits to the local aerobics room with its wood floor, high ceiling and mirror walls.
No way am I going to rot in a chair with two dozen pill bottles for company.

You know, exercise has NEVER been a stress reliever for me. In fact, when I'm stressed, exercise can add to my stress.
I just exercise to get the juices flowing, and because it makes me more alert. I don't see that, however, as "relieving stress", but maybe I'm just splitting hairs.
I like the TKD exercises, so long as they're done at a level I'm comfortable with.

At this point it doesnt feel right if I dont train. Kinda like a part of my well being.
When I started... Self Defense. I was already in good physical condition when I started from football, wrestling, and weight training.
