Hi sstefan. I wouldn't get too hung up on the "purity" of martial arts - most of them are not 'pure' at all. Many karate styles like wado-ryu, and kenpo are themselves combinations of other arts. TKD is a combined style. Many chinese systems are combined styles, and so on.

Being pure or not has very little to do with how effective something is, anyway. smile

@Pillars
These are my top ten because in my opinion are the most effective martial arts & fighting systems. Ofcourse everyone has his likes and dislikes.

Yes mate, i'd gathered that. I really meant what in your opinion makes them so effective?

I'd have to base my top ten on what I've trained in or know of.

TKD, for agility, power and endurance (as well as interesting array of foot techniqies)

Judo/wrestling - stamina, sheer guts involved in doing it, (I'll assume this would also go with BJJ but I've not done any).

Muay Thai, the toughness and emphasis on hard techniques.

Eskrima- weapons/weapon defence

Tai Chi- so damn subtle.

Boxing- the training and toughness of it.

Wing Chun- the simplicity of it (and that I'm training in it at the mo!);-)

I am using no method at all. Because such thing does not exist, it is an illusion.

No, an illusion is walking around in circles, convinced that you will eventually get somewhere without direction.

They did have guns back then, which worked their way into much of Asia. The early models, however, were unreliable and considered throwaway weaponry.

Only my limited knowledge and even more limited experience.

The point I was trying to make is that having no method is the same as lacking a direction. In that without a method (a direction), we would find ourselves walking in circles, going no where, accomplishing little.

However, we shouldn't follow any given method dogmatically, resistant to scrutiny and change. Instead, we should scrutinize our methods (and allow our methods to be scrutinized) to determine their usefulness, weaknesses and strengths. And if needed, change, modify, discard them or replace them with better methods.
