Hey guys - I just got a kukri machete and thought I'd do a review of it. I'm going at it from the martial arts perspective.

Part 2: tests and discussion of martial aspects

Here's my blog post on it with some notes: http://martial.jessecrouch.com/2009/11/cold-steel-kukri-machete-review-martial.html

It's pretty cool as a martial arts weapon. I've got a strong Kali background, so it fits right in with my personal style. Despite the large head, it isn't off-balance or awkward.

The Khukuri isn't a machete - sorry to be pedantic, but the shape of the blade, and the heritage behind it are such that a distinction should be maintained.

As for its use in eskrima/Kali, a real, Nepalese Khukuri would be poorly suited - I have tried Sinawali with mine, and its just not quite wieldy enough for the transition of angles, and the curvature of the blade is designed for use with more torque, or less 'finesse' than the compact striking of FMA.

If you want to see real khukuri's, then dont look at Cold Steel, check thses guys out - they supply The Ghurka regiment of the British Army, and are ex servicemen themselves.

If you like a mass produced, chinese steel replica Khukuri, then a hand forged made to order genuine example will make you very happy indeed smile

Bought a pair of them about 5 years ago, I use them like kama.
