This asian regional BBC news reporter was walking through Manchester on his way to film a piece for the evening news, when a couple of drunk thugs decided to harrass him. This is the full CCTV footage as shown to the court. For those with low attention spans, the 'money shot' arrives at 2 mins 13 seconds.
Turns out the Reporter happened to be a dan grade in karate, with a top level competetive background.
Before anyone jumps in with the usual 'yeah, but he should have kept at him, stomped him and made sure he didnt get up' stuff, please bear in mind that both guys got convictions for this, whilst the judge said, "He defended himself, he delivered a blow. I say good for Mr Patel."
Self defence can include ensuring that you get away safe and legal - when you are confident you have the measure of the situation you are in.
That knee/cross combo was as fast as i have seen, so he gets nothin' but love from me

The dude was also patient as all get out---how many times did he walk away?
Smart--plenty of people saw him walk away--caught it on plenty of angles for the camara...no question about whom was the aggressor.....very neat....and very cool.

Huey.
The UK has more CCTV cameras than anywhere else in the world, and we have more public surveilance than any other country.
This is what has led to the 'hoody' culture among the young - their rebellion is to keep their faces obscured from 'the man', but from this guy's perspective, he used it to his advantage. His sound man, if you notice, keeps well out of harms way, and out of the attackers attention, so he can call the police. Once an accurate location is taken, the city CCTV centre track the events and coordinate police response through directions and real time oral description of events to attending officers.
This guy's calm reaction, refusal to stop and get 'trapped', and constant awareness of the big picture ensured that not only did he stay safe, but gave police enough time to respond with a positive outcome.
Those a-holes were played on every level

Wow. Im more impressed with his display of patience than his particular skills, which were also very good. There was a moment about 1:45 when you cant really see the reporter but you can see the criminal. He rears his hand back and looks like he throws a strike at the reporter. That would have been more than enough for me to attack. Kudos for the cool head.

As above - very smart guy, two very dumb criminals. I liked the way that at one point, he positioned himself between two parked cars, ensuring that only one of the aggressors could approach him. I also think that this clip highlights how effective manned cctv and mobile police contact can be, as the copper at the end clearly knows the score.
