referring to Bill Burgers "1 kata 5 years" book...

Which single Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate Kata whould you choose if you could only study that 1 kata for 5 years and why?

If you have not advanced to learning the complete Kata curriculum, please say which is the highest you know also or how longyou have studied.

Haven't read that book yet, just some reviews, but made me think and curious what others would choose

Happy to hear of other styles of goju, karate (shorin, etc) & kata also. But especially interested in Okin. Goju-Ryu guys

thanks

I'll be your Huckeberry meaning "I'll Play".
If I had one Kata to study for 5 years exclusively (in Goju-Ryu systeem) it would be Sepai because of its effiecent enterin and merging with slight angels and mis-direction and mix turns and use of various techniques that can be used to confuse and SURPRISE the oopponent. Staying close but off angle which is how I like to fight & spar.

To Me it is a Great form that displays Goju-Ryus hard and soft methdds and application using the attackers body against him and also using deception ending with a confusng mis direction throw and a head smash or neck break no mercy, however your system defines it.

I train the complete syllabas, Suparinpei being the highest form in Goju-Ryu. I've trained Sepai for 20+ maybe 25 years along with the other forms. No I have not read that book but I have read certain clips from a like book or article that been floating around these forum.

Explained without getting too technicail adhearing to the KISS theroy, that I like so much.

Which "flavor" of Okinawan Goju are we limited to prey tell? Myself, I like Tensho but I could work w/ Sanchin too if only one kata were available.

I dislike the "iron shirt" sillyness; too many hit far too hard to allow anyone to strike me with defacto impunity. Given the option far prefer ~Shorin mobility~ thanks wink

Hi,

you said ok if not Goju-Ryu...

First ideal choice-The full set of Ba Gua Palm changes (its kind really 8, but all can be done knitted as one.

Close tie with above. Vovinam- Plum blossom form on posts

Shotokan-Lotus form (might actually be unique to Cuong-Nhu,
not sure)

Karl. Peace.

I think the 1 kata 5 years is an interesting concept. But I am also interested in how many repetitions of a particular kata that might entail in someone's training.

Yabu Kentsu said that to one needed to practice a kata 10,000 times to make it one's own. Let's for a moment consider a kata that takes 45 seconds to perform. Then in a minute one can perform and rest well. If one were to do that for one hour, every day, then in less than 6 months, you would reach 10,000 reps. And in 5 years, 100,000 reps.

That's a lot of reps of one kata, and I am not sure many of us will ever do that for one kata.

Take half of that. 30 minutes a day for 12 months. - 10,000 kata. That is not a huge investment. 15 minutes, morning and night. And you still get to 50,000 reps in 5 years. Again a huge number of reps.

I would rather go with Yabu Kentsu's 10,000 number. In fact, I am attempting that right now.

The kata I have chosen:

Pinan Godan (aka Heian Godan)

It's short, so the reps come much faster.

I have the book and love it. I am however not a Goju stylist so I wouldn't just a Goju kata.

I just started learning Gojushiho-Sho which is the kata in the book. I think I will be devoting a lot of time to that kata in the next few years.

If I had to pick---I'd go with Seisan, my favorite.

Alternate would be Seipai.

Kanku Dai. It's quite long and holds many of the Heian techniques in it, would be good for variety of exploration. Also Funakoshi's favorite demo kata.

I'd practice Tekki if I could count the whole series as one kata (I know I'm cheating). If not, my choice is Bassai - strikes, throws, kicks and locks in one kata.

I imagine the inspiration for this thread comes from Bill Burgar's book, but I recall Dave Lowry wrote a column on the same theme in 1988 or 1989 for Black Belt magazine where he discussed the concept of focusing on one form for an extended period - by the way, he chose Bassai, too wink
