Multivitamins are okay--but it's a lot better in the long term to try and get your diet optimal. A trip to the nutritionist is (at least here) about the same price as a years supply of good multivitamins.

You should def be taking vit C. Humans are almost the only animal that doens't produce it in our bodys so we must rely on dietary sources and the little fruit and veg we eat doesn't have enough. The more physical and emotional stress you put your body through the more vit C you need. It's entirely harmless, the worst that can happen if you take masses ie more than 10g a day is a touch of the runs. It reduces the effects of stress on the body and fights viruses etc. Take about 3g a day then double or treble it if you get ill and be amazed at your speed of recovery.
Ignore the medical profession who say you can get vit c from diet because you just can't. They are financed by the drugs companys who don't want people taking vit C because then they wouldn't need anywhere near as many drugs.
Believe what you want, all I know is I take it regularly, am in my mid 40s and haven't needed to see a doctor for at least 15 years.

vitmains and minerals are no different to any other form of nutrient, too much throws the balance of the body out, and can have negative effects. Too much of a good thing stops it being a good thing.

Had to laugh when I read that. There is a masive smear campaign against vitamins, particularly vitamin C by the drugs companies who control all aspects of Western medicine and see people getting healthy with nutrients they can't licence as a threat to their business. You may think I'm paranoid but the evidence is clear. The kind of article you pointed to is one of many they put out to blind people to the truth which is that nobody ever died or was made seriously ill by vitamin C whereas 100,000 people die every year in America alone (around 10,000 in the UK) from drugs prescribed to them by their doctors. These figures may sound unbelievable but are true and I kow what I'd rather take - my current 4g average of vitamins C which is non toxic or some drug that may have massive and possibly fatal effects (they call them side effects which is marketing speak for effects). Like I say I am extremely fit and healthy for my age and will continue to take my vitamin C until the drugs companies finally manage to take it off the shelves.
I can imagine it took more searching to find something bad about vitamin C than something good as its generally recognised to be not only good for health but more essential than we ever thought. See www.vitamincfoundation.org/ (among many many many others) who are a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping people through promoting this essential nutrient.
btw too much doesn't throw the balance of the body out like the fat soluble vitamins, being a water soluble vitamin if you take more than you need you just excrete it.

Well, having an academic background in nutrition, I already knew that overdosing on any nutrient had the potential to be harmful. All it took was typing 'negative effects of too much vitamin C' in to google, and I was presented with a nice range of data.

I chose this article in particular, as it clearly points out that you can get all the vit C you need from natural foods (any 'limey' knows that eh?) , and that it clearly points out that there is a distinction in properties between naturaly ingested Vit C and supplement form.

You take a lot of Vit C and dont use a doctor. Good for you. My Grandfather drank a litre of scotch a week, smoked every day, and died of old age at 94.

The offlicense and tobacconist is that way....

Conspiracy theories are hilarious. Ever think that supplements are every bit the multi-billion dollar industry that medicine is. Makes you wonder who is playing whom?

Do what you like, but no way am I going to allow advocacy of a potentialy dangerous practice go unchallenged ona forum under my direct custody.

Both points have been stated clearly. Readers can now make up their minds if they evolved as the only animals on earth who could not get their required nutrients from natural sources.
