Hi,
This is my first post on these forums.
Just this past saturday, my dojo held a Sai clinic... basically a 3h intro to the weapon, lots of kihon to get comfortable with the sai topped off with a kata at the end. In preparation for the clinic one of our sensei took the measurements of all those interested and batch ordered the sais.
After the clinic, and because I haven't had a chance to buy a proper bag yet, i put the sais into my duffel along with my gi and other gear. Later I noticed that near the handle, at the swell where the two side prongs branch from the main one there was some discoloration on each sai. something between a copper and salmon color that also speckled between the prongs and a bit along the center prong.
My question is, is this discoloration normal (it's right around where I grip them), or a sign that the chrome is wearing off/defective? If the former, is there some way to clean it off and keep the sai in good shape, or is it one of those things that's normal for the weapon? Thanks a ton,
El

I'm assuming these are black steel Sai or natural color (uncoated) steel? I would wipe the metal down with a lightly oil rag, and then used a clean dry towel to wipe any perspiration from the grips. I would also do this even if they are chrome Sai.

Hoping I helped a little..

If they are black steel or Natural Iron sai, like mine, they will oxidize sometimes. For me it happens more during the humid summer. Ill take them out of my case and they will have what looks like an orangish rust on them, but i just wipe them down with a rag before training and its fine. Nothing to worry about. Ive not heard of any methods for preventing this.

For those of you with the cloth cord handle wrappings I suggest waxing the cord. Either use bow wax or candle wax. I've had the same wrapping on my Shureido's for the last 30 years and the only real damage has been caused by them hitting each other when I went through a "gotta learn to throw the sai" phase.

This is normal. The chrome is cheap and it happens with wear.
I would not try using any oil on the sai. These are heavy, pointed, weapons. There is no need to make them any more difficult to hold on to.

Hi,

As I tend to advance in my control of a weapon I use it against, wooden ladders (They are great), posts wrapped in carpet, tires, helpless trees (no bunnies tho)and have long ago reached a place where the integrity (safety) of the weapon is paramount...appearance, Cha!, if its not scored, abraded or just plain LOOKS used that's good...I spent a price I wont mention 6 years ago for a (not folded, not Hanwei) differentially tempered sword from japan designed for tamashigiri (not shinken not nihonto, a cutting iaito). Paid and got still quite nice sword for tamashigiri...after 6 years of cutting is it pretty...NAW.

Practice with weapons on impact etc should be part of learning the weapon...breaking the weapon happens too so watch surroundings (if it comes at you hope you have good reflexes, never broke sai tho, broke tonfa at handle interface)
I'm proof looks arnt everything smile

Karl. Peace.
