I'm not sure if we are thinking of the same kick, but, in savate, the frontal revers [sort of an outside crescent kick] is pretty useful when attacking. You can throw it up close so it's not telegraphed too much, and you can use it to 'drag' through the opponents guard in a way that opens them up to a follow through with punches, or with a kick with the other leg. Or, if you are being flash, it sets up a turn into a different kick.

The kick you guys are talking about is a 'reverse hook kick' ? In a southpaw stance, the right knee comes up on the centerline then the foot angles to the left and kicks in on an angle from bottom left to top right, kicking with the instep, just like in a hook kick. This kick is quite comfortable and I know I've fooled a few people with it in sparring especially kickboxing / muay thai guys as they don't know of it. It's a sneaky one. As for balance and recovery in that kick, they should be just finae because the beginning and the end of the kick are still the same as other kicks (knee on centerline and quick recovery. This kick can have a fair bit of power in it and because of its angle, it's actually easier to recover from then a hook kick thrown with the same follow through because it will stop as it goes to the outside (right) of the body, rather than a hook kick that can go through (right to left) to make the body rotate if not controlled. Thanks for the feedback on my technique guys I really appreciate it. Anyway, here's another clip that I uploaded, I'd really appreciate your feedback on this one too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0y31hK2_gMMany thanks

You can see a savate guy doing the kick I am talking about here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMJed79-WoMIt's a combo where he kicks the guy in the leg, then turns the same kick with the same leg into an outside crescent kick to pull down the guard and then follows with a punch. A similar combination repeated several times right at the start. Slow-motion from a different angle at about 0.35 in. The vid shows the crescent thrown to break down the guard from both front and rear leg. There's also some nice footwork shown there. The guy in that vid is Kamel Chouaref : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqYmIuZpvIQ&feature=relatedthat short compilation shows some light-contact training and then some full-contact knockouts using the same. Same outside crescent combo at about 1.15-1.25 in that vid. Here's a JKD guy doing the same kick [although he's further out from the target and the swing across the body is less exaggerated than a textbook savate revers frontal]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RRGqIU3Lt0

The savate guys are doing hooking hill kicks whereas the JKD guy is doing a reverse hook kick (which is what I was doing)
The hooking hill kicks are harder to do, but can be used as a jabbing backfist, to disturb opponent's balance. I've even seen a knockout using a hooking hill kick as othodox stance guys don't expect it it as it goes inside their guard.

You can throw that kick when you are toe-to-toe with the opponent. I'm not especially flexible, but that's one of the kicks I know I can flick up to head height while in close and throwing punches. It lands a surprisingly high % of the time -- although it only works if people let you get that close.
My timing could be better, so it wouldn't be that unusual for me to throw it just as the opponent leans slightly out of range.
