the movement in the solo kata seemed pretty clean, smooth and with good kime. i don't practice these versions of the kata so beyond that i can't really say much else.

the kumite seemed to lack lateral movement, set ups and finishing blows. not to be a jerk or anything, they could probably kick the snot out of me, lol. but just to help my point a little, you can see when they get close and flurry punches at each other how the techniques lack finishing power. i'd have to be hit by one to tell for sure, but thats the feeling i get when i watch the video.

over all clean, but lacking a "finishing intent" i aim for with my own training.

*edit*

what do you think of it med?

Its okay, but not my cup of ti. The kata is okay but a little stiff for my tastes, and I kumite differently. But there was lateral movement. Look at the first guy sparring. He was using tai sabaki, although not quite how I do it.

Karate "fo da realz"? Real Matsumura Seito? I don't get it. Anybody recognize the first two kata that are shown-they don't ring a bell with me.

Duane, its an inside joke. There was a member here who always sang the praises of Matsumura Seito. In fact, he sometimes said that today only Soken's karate was real karate. Well, I stumbled upon this clip of James Coffman, who is supposedly the real deal and one of the best Seito guys around. So I posted it if anyone wants to, as some have said in the past, see karate "fo da realz." If its authentic Matsumura Seito I have no idea because that is not my style.

from the video:

no. not ewok. it's a picture of a Jawa:

When displayed in a dojo as in the video, they symbolize arts that claim to be 'for the realz' but actually scavange from other arts, repackage and sell as authentic goods.

I find it interesting to make comparisons.

Coffman Sensei begins with the opening section of his Gojushiho kata. In turn I like to compare it to the instructor who trained me in Gojushiho Tristan Sutrisno, which can be seen at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyVT5pkJqf4&feature=channel_page

The versions are somewhat similar for the opening.
