Hi
I have a problem I hope you can help me with.
Whenever I spar or take part in self defence exercises I have a tendency to freeze, cower and generally lack effectiveness. My sensei tells me I am thinking too much, I need to react rather than try and plan what I am going to do.
Has anyone else had this problem, if so, how did you overcome it? Or could someone point me toward a resource that might help
Thanks in advance,

Andy

Without seeing you and working with you, I'd be remiss to say you Sensei is wrong, but my gut reaction is not that you should react, that's a attained skill. I think you need to simplify.

Come up with number of planned combinations, then try and make them work. You will fail, but thats OK sparring is not about winning, it's about development.

Once you get the feeling of how combinations work, and how you can apply them with some success you will become more comfortable, then you can begin to improvise and not need to pre plan as much.

Look if you are a fighter you are always thinking, you need to break apart the other persons game, see their mistakes, capitalize on the openings they give you...but thats later, right now you need to clear your mind and work your basics.

It's like your building a house, first you have to pour a foundations, later you can worry about carpet or tile.

Cheers!

Thanks for that, Yeah, clear my mind.
I think part of the problem is that we don't spar very often, so, I always seem to be coming to it fresh, plus I have noone to practice with outside the dojo.
But there is also a courage factor too. I don't seem to be able to "commit" myself to the sparring exercise (does that make sense?). I always seem to be holding back, I can't help feeling if I could "let go" as it were a lot of things might come easier.

i had this problem. i wanted to practice as many different techniques as i could in a round of sparring. (not a great idea). but like the other reply said stick to a few basics. even if you only using front and turning kicks and basic punches then its a good start.
i the self defence exercises reflexive actions are really important as all these break away methods seem to work better when you make use of the 'surprise' practice one slowly until you have got it then repeat that's how i over came the over thinking.

Totally makes sense. It's just confidence in your fighting, that comes with experience and some success.

You don't spar often? How far along are you in your training? I ask because often instructors hold off on sparring until they get you trained in the basics. If you are new to MA, jumping into full speed sparring can be overwhelming.

Kimo2007, i'm a 3rd Kyu, been going for a couple of years.
I hope I have the basics. I think we don't spar very often because our syllabus is so huge, my style is "GoJu Ryu", plus sparring is seen as not being very "zen"

hard traing to rid yourself of ignorance and to help you to distinguish between what you know and what you don't know. exploring the void, what could be more zen?

I fully understand what you are talking about. A long time ago, I would be ready to spar only to find myself fearful, then I get overwhelmed, thus causing me to cower in more fear. What helped me, and might help you is a good old fashion butt kicking. Just not just one but several. I don't say this to offend, but to say that I was deeply afraid of getting hurt, or worse yet, hurting the other guy thus giving reason for the class to hurt me more. What helped me out was not to focus on getting hurt. Try this, 1) stop watching action flicks or anything else that shows one guy getting hit once and crashing to the floor cause of the hit. 2) Get a VERY good friend in the dojo who understands, and wants to help. Spar against that person, but you can only throw a punch or kick after every 3rd time you get hit/kicked. Keep doing this enough time that you get bored of being hit. then do it again, but you lesson the number of hits you take till you hit back. You should reprogram your mind to know that if you get hit, its not like on TV. Getting hit is not that big of a deal. good luck

Thanks for that, it looks like, as I suspected, there are no easy answers. I will work hard on my techniques, try to formulate my own combinations and get my butt kicked on a regular basis!
Thanks for all your help.

Sparring in isolation phase is useful for both defense and offense. Have the opponent do 1 round where he does nothing but attack, while you have to move and defend. Do the next round where you do nothing but attack while the opponent defends. Start by using hands only. After a few rounds of that, add kicks. After a few rounds of isolation, try to add it all back in again in free-sparring.

This way works very well for those just getting into sparring and contact.
