That is a very good question,
The short answer is the clinch. The reason IMO is because it's the pivotal range. If you want to keep a fight standing or take it to ground, your clinch game will largely determine how this goes, does it not?
The longer answer though will sound as if I am contradicting that somewhat. The truth is, all ranges are interdependent. Your stand-up game will facilitate your clinch. Your clinch will facilitate your ground game. Your ground game will facilitate your stand-up game. It's a big wheel that keeps revolving.
