The powers of youtube now make these things avalaible to us all,

I think Tomari Te deserves recognition, and therefore am pleased to simply link you all, into some of the kata from the Kosaku Matsumora (1829-1898)-Kodatsu Iha-Seiyu Nakasone lineage,

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Nakasone+Seiyu+&search_type=&aq=-1&oq

This footage was taken at a formal demonstration in Okinawa 1982.

Hi Jim,

Thank you, I had just found them myself the other day. We owe Mario McKenna a big debt for sharing them.

I have some private video on Tomari-te but this is the most extensive I've seen.

interesting

your e-mail highlighted them to me Victor, yes indeed very good footage.

It is fantastic to see clearly authentic kata from that line, it has it's own flavour dosen't it.

Interesting, but Jim, you have seen such kata from the Matsumora/Kodatsu line before. Nagamine's Passai, Wanshu, Wankan, and Rohai were taught to him from Kodatsu and his Naihanchi from Chojin Kuba(a student of Kodatsu as well). However, I have never seen a "dai" version of kata independent of Itosu so that makes me wonder why the wansu was labeled as dai. However, the Naihanchi Sandan does further support the theory that there is a line of Naihanchi kata other than Naihanchi Shodan independent of Itosu from Uku Giko. In fact, this Naihanchi Sandan is very close to that of Nagamine.

FYI, the original version of Wansu that Tokashiki Iken learned from Nakasone, Tokashiki referred to as Wansu dai. He later developed another version based on studying and discussions with a peer of Nakaone (Hokama I believe) and called it Wansu sho.

Mario McKenna
