And in case I didn't make it clear - yes, it is difficult to explain from a physics POV. Of course, I would say that this is because of my relative lack of knowledge and experience in the field of physics, not because of something "metaphysical"...

Aw c'mon Dan... the metaphysical stuff sounds sooo much cooler...

First you sink your chee into the ground. You root! Like a tree. Then you send your chee from your dantien to the other person and you project them backwards.... like so!

See... it makes the physics less boring that way... that's why it's called meta-physics!

Maybe someone else would like to attempt the physics/kinesiology explanation for that? Any takers?

Would you care to show some pics or video? (You said you would post some pics on the other thread... where are they?)

Oy vey.

Video was not taken that day. Photos are right there in that very thread.....if you would bother to read it.

Maybe we can discuss this, and how it is different to what the old bagua guy is doing? To me it sounds like the same thing. But I could be wrong... as you know, I'm deluded.

With all due respect to Victor, I have the same problem with that trick, too. It would be difficult, bordering on impossible, to maintain such a fine degree of alignment under the pressure of opponent resistance. That's why I considered it a "trick", not really of martial value, per Zach's original post.

If you're asking me to explain it, I already said I can't. Perhaps Victor will oblige.

That counts as external to internal skill

Now describe the physics involved.

Did this involve a funnel and someone pinching his nose closed?

Nope. Donington rock festival 1994. Through circumstances too complicated to go into, our tent was burnt, and we spent the final night locked in the mini-bus, with a minimum of 2 people awake and 'on sentry' to make sure the scum camped 3 tents down didnt break in using an fire axe.
Like I said, it was a complicated situation.

Anyway, me and my mate Cliff were on 'sentry' (we had a lot of speed and weed, and neither of us intended to sleep anyway), and steadily, everyone else faded into slumber. one of the sleeping beauties ('CJ') dropped off with his arm extended over the back of a bus seat, his face pressed into the window. As his grip on the can relaxed in his sleep, he reflexively gripped it tight and brought it to his lips for a gulp (eyes still shut, still asleep). Me and Cliff rolled a couple of fat ones and got comfy to obeserve this phenomenon repeated to the end of the can, when he promptly, on autopilot, cracked a fresh one and began the process again!!!!
The second can fell to the floor with dregs in it, and we reverted to listening to motorhead on the bus tape player, and weighing up the pros and cons of firing the engine up and running those f*ckers over in their tent. Thankfully, neither of us could focus well enough to attempt the mission.

There's no need to take that tone. It was a genuine question. Which photos are you specifically referring to? It would help if you could reference the ones under discussion directly in this thread and also describe generally what the parameters of the exercise were. It's not an unreasonable request Matt. There's no need to be antagonistic or obtuse about it.

I'm not being obtuse. Photos are right there in the thread. We can discuss whatever ones you feel are noteworthy.

Well then, could you please post the ones that are relevant to the point you raised above?
Quote:

Victor Smith had us do something with the placement of our arms (in guard position) that made it very difficult for us to be pushed back/over. I couldn't figure out what it was, but it did work in a demo scenario. The difference in placement between working and not working was very small.

And can you please describe the parameters of the exercise in a bit more detail? "Do something" is a little vague. Can you provide more explanation please?
