I have decided to begin training for my 3 rd Dan.

We require:

1. A kata of choice of higher Shotokan kata. (I've chosen Meikyo). I think I can do it well but it needs refinement - but I know what I need to improve upon. Effective bunkai against skilled and resisting opponents is scarce.

2. A demonstration or teaching component at the training camp:

I previously wanted to learn Wanduan and demonstrate it and the applications to black belts in a special training session. Now I just want to do a demonstration of Meikyo and Rohai, with applications to show the difference between the two and their applicationsm during the normal "demonstration time". The version of Rohai I should choose is giving me problems. Meikyo is closest to Matsumura Rohai through Itosu, yes?

Now I don't really have direct access to the form I wanted to demonstrate/teach.

3. A new weapon with competence in basics, self defence and a form. I've chosen the Jutte but no little about this weapon other than Ryukyu and Japanese guards used these to keep civilians and soldiers in line. We do a non buguei version of Tsuken Shitahaku no Sai BTW.

4. A martial arts project - you might compare this to a thesis or a major work. Bascially you're paying your way into the boy's club with something new or something that has been lost or rarely practiced since karate has been lost and watered down since Itosu to 1945.

I am fairly technologically incompetent so the last one will need some extra efforts. If I made a DVD of something it would be pretty bloody awful.

I await comments, help and abuse.

Hi Mark,

I think you've a difficult choice ahead of you chosing Jutte as your weapon. I've only seen one book on it, George Kirby's 'Jutte', it is an adjunct weapon study to his jutsu studies, does not appear to have kata, and is essentually used in a jujutsu setting.

A quick check of youtube seems to indicate the same.
