Will anyone be watching the opening ceremonies? They're generally regarded as an excellent display of the host country's culture and there will apparently be a mix of modern and traditional dancing, music and, of course, martial arts displays.

I missed it. So sad. So far, I've been watching Phelps and other swimming events.

I have to say that I am dismayed to hear of the guile the Chinese have employed in the Olympics. CGI-enhanced fireworks, faux patriotic singer, under-age athletes......disappointing to me.

So many other things have been awesome about it, why ruin it with deception?

Hi Matt,

Just saw your post. I think the answer is very simple, they don't operate under the rules we play by, which is thier right too.

To them the state controls the content of the show, and if they cgi' part of it, or have someone lipsync, the show is still what they want to show.

They don't accept that only truth is right.

Which gets into fundamental differences between different cultures.

Can't argue with that.

As far as minimum age - If there is no international standard or rules, then that means the host country at the time, gets to cook the parameters of the contests. making the whole idea of an 'international olympic commitee' a farce.

sorry, cheating on age in the olympics is the same as a 220lb boxer fighting for a lightweight title. ...nothing to do with culture, it's cheating.

if the age minimum needs to be reduced, or a new division added, fine - but let it be with universal and enforced rules.

under age

...and it's their right to lose their medals too, if the IOC doesn't agree with 'Chinese rules'.

actually, if they don't investigate/punish broken rules, it makes the Olympics arbitrary and relative to the country hosting them. ie: corrupt and illegitimate.

It's their right to jack up the entire olympics for everyone because it's in their country this year? Hogspit!
