What ISN'T a weapon? More interesting to me, is what do I carry that only has defensive applications.

If anyone, including people who post here take a weapon out with them when they walk the streets, you need to seriously ask yourself why you do martial arts training and in some cases - QUIT.

Aside from some aspects, martial arts is UNARMED COMBAT.

Any thug can use a weapon, defending yourself without a weapon is much more skillful and that is what the martial arts is about, (at least to me...)

To me, you're wasting your time money and effort paying for a class when you'd be willing to hit or stab someone with a weapon.

I completely understand if you're up against someone trying to kill you, but in your average bar brawl or street fight, it's unnecessary to take out or use a weapon.

Martial arts means exactly that. If were called 'unarmed combat training' I could see your point. Martial arts encompass various weapons. You must be on an entirely higher plain of martial arts mastery than me to find weapons simply obsolete. But seriously, the only time I would ever consider fighting is if it were against someone intent on killing me and I had run out of options. No humdrum bar fights or street brawls for me, you're right, maybe I should quit martial arts, hahaha. To respond to my own post: I usually keep a small folding knife on my belt loop for utility purposes (comes in handy more than you'd think and it's totally legal for that matter) and a can of mace in my car. In my home I don't carry because I've got all sorts of tonfa, nunchaku and things of the like scattered around for training purposes.

Novum, IMHO you significantly increase the odds of you or someone dear to you getting stabbed or shot by carrying a knife of your belt loop. You will not be the only one reaching for it as an altercation escalates into a fight. I don't know the statistics on attackers turning the defenders own weapons against them but it does happen enough for me not to carry a weapon. Even if you do defend yourself justly with your weapon, you may still end up in prison. Yes, you may have avoided getting beaten and mugged but now your locked up. Just the presence of a weapon escalates any situation. Trained empty handed self defense, with no weapon on your person, is the best option.

Empty hand defense is for empty hand attacks.

Aside from some aspects, martial arts is UNARMED COMBAT.

Ever hear of kobudo? The okinawans developed karate after they were forbidden to carry weapons-thus the improvised weapons grew.

Any thug can use a weapon, defending yourself without a weapon is much more skillful and that is what the martial arts is about, (at least to me...)

Anyone who would knowingly attempt to defend themselves against an armed attacker when weapons are available is....let's just say they will be cleansed from the gene pool

To me, you're wasting your time money and effort paying for a class when you'd be willing to hit or stab someone with a weapon.

You try and kill me or my family and will do exactly that-using my knowledge and skills from my martial arts training which includes sticks, knives, etc.

I completely understand if you're up against someone trying to kill you, but in your average bar brawl or street fight, it's unnecessary to take out or use a weapon.

I go back to my original statement-obey the law, if your justified do what needs to be done to win the fight.

You might be right, I've never delved too deeply into the statistics of this sort of thing. I meant the knife comes in handy for utility purposes by the way.

Carry your knife concealed so it can't be taken away. So according to your argument when the police arrive on scene the situation should go through the roof because they carry guns, sticks, and chemical spray....(all or some of the above depending on the country you live in)?
In my personal experience taking out a weapon usually gets people to start thinking clearly and acting accordingly.
Not exactly sure how you end up in prison for defending yourself justifiably...fearmongering perhaps.Know the law and obey the law and in most cases you'll be ok.

Yes, the scene usually does go through the roof when the police arrive. Situations escalate when they or anyone has a weapon.

You take out a weapon to make people act accordingly? I see from your bio that your a LE trainer, that seems to fit.

You have a lot of faith in the law, good luck with that.

I keep a kubaton... have since I was 16. It makes a great tool for defense, but I carry it mostly because I had a bad habit of dropping my keys... that thing rings quite loud when it hits the floor.

While I understand what you mean, I do not agree. I choose not to carry weapons, but I most certainly understand why people do. Martial arts and weapons is not an either/or scenario.

Incorrect. Martial arts are all types of combat, armed and unarmed.

True enough. Maybe even thugs that might attack you.

I think it's unnecessary to get into bar brawls and street fights - you never know if they will be "average" or not until it's over.
