So, you are saying it is a warrior/fighting art? It seems to me that people want to make too much philosophical junk out of it.

I'm saying it's just karate. No more, no less.

I think what Victor maybe is saying is that Karate was around before being turned into a publically examined and known commodity, and that perhaps it would be better to return to the mindset of the time before.
The difference in teaching method and training environment that Victor is talking about is a big deal. The point about an instructor training your body is something that is probably missing in alot of modern Karate training. You see it in CIMA but not that many Karate dojo do this kind of training anymore...
Not sure I agree 100% but it is an interesting point, we spend alot of time comparing and whittling away at the concept of Karate as if it's something we can quantify, and fully compare with other arts with more modern teaching methods.
Not sure if that will ever get us anywhere as Karateka, but it passes the time on forums lol.

Here is what would really be crazy...
If we all traveled those great distances to get together and when we arrived, refused to get out of our vehicles and enjoy each others company.
Sometimes awakening includes the realization that the vehichle (method) used to bring the person to a destination or level of realization can be set aside.
That is true, unless my fighting application developed by using my "vehicle" was to run my opponent's over with my car. Then there would be no need to leave the vehicle behind.

Victor, that was my point.
In amongst the romance of solitary training in front of Buddah's disciple on the mountain top, were you perchance worked to exhuastion on a regular basis for no other reason than to toughen you up?
That is what I think of when I think of Karate, and trying to add labels of DO or Jutsu to distance ones training from others I think is pointless when confidence and athleticism are all that really matter in a cnfrontation.

medulanet is so on point. quite honestly, who cares about dojos and their gimmicks. If you want to study and practice, you do your training, practice and homework. I assume most of us live in a western society here, yet, study an eastern art form. If you don't do some research on the true "hows and whys" to discover where the elements come from how can we learn and use them as they were intended. what you end up with is an adaptation of a martial art and the years of history are gone.

Hi Dan,
I see kata delivering some conditioning benefits,
but no where near the level of simple bodyweight routines (or running, aerobics etc etc) and of course equipment led approachs (very traditional of course).
For me physical conditioning is not one of katas strengths.
I do accept hard reps over and over again will bring some conditioning benefit, I can just think of more appropiate ways to achieve that (same with Kihon on air).
Hi Jim
This is a subject heavily debated on another thread. I've condensed my thoughts on this subject in my blog - as I frequently do. Take a look at: http://dandjurdjevic.blogspot.com/2008/06/kata-as-conditioning-tool.html.
I think that kata has a number of functions, but rather than restate all those that have been mentioned in the other posts, I added this element. Note my comment that which kata you choose can radically affect the "conditioning" element.

I shall take a look Dan,
my feeling is proberly led on how I focus on kata training, which is in the paper I sent over.
I do accept others have a slightly different take of course.

I just don't agree with that at all. Can't have "energy release" without resistance, IMHO.
Perhaps you are confusing "energy release" with "energy transfer"?
