What would be a good starting point to increase endurance during sparring. I mean heavy bag training, and how much should I roughly add each day or week. I am trying to do just arms for now, but eventually I will throw in kicks.
I notice during sparring I am out of breath. One part is due to being out of shape, but the other part could it be my choice of mouth piece? Should I have a mouth piece with a hole between the top teeth and bottom teeth?

About going out of breath...try to practice running for about 15 mins each day or take a day pause between jogs. U may try to sprint in the end 100 meters or so. And while sparring, try to breathe calmly and a bit more deeply than usual. Helps me out at least

You get used to working with a mouthguard in. At first I struggled but after a while you learn to breathe normally with one and half the time you won't even notice you're wearing one. I assume you are wearing a normal guard that just covers the top teeth? or are you wearing something else?

Interval training is good for sparring endurance. Sparring usually requires pretty high levels of effort in 2 - 3 min bursts, so it's good to work some training in that mimics those kinds of intervals.

Unfortunately, I can't do any running yet. So what would you suggest for an arm work out?

Try going at the heavy bag in intervals: e.g., 45 sec full intensity, 45 sec slow and easy. Try a few (like 3 or 4 to start) sets of those and then increase sets/times according to your progress.

will that improve my breathing or should I do the intervals with my mouth guard in?

Leave the mouthpiece out for training solo. What you're really training here is your heart's ability to deliver oxygen to your muscles. That will help you get more from your breathing, with or without a mouthpiece.

Edit: make sure you warm up before you do this kind of interval workout--you could injure yourself if you go all out when your muscles are cold.

Thanks, I will start next sunny day. My wife won't let me have the heavy bag inside.

The best condition I've ever been in is when an instructor friend of mine had us train up to a complete hour of non-stop sparring. It took a month to work up to and my body became very hard. At the beginning it was 15min. non-stop. Week 2, 30min, wk. 3, 45min. and wk 4, 60min. That was on Sunday mornings. We had a 7man team. Note: I've run two marathons and those times I had not, I repeat had not achieved the physical condition that I had when we did those 60min non-stop sparring sessions. You need a small group of dedicated practioners to make this happen. Good Luck
