While I understand what you are saying, CXT, when I look at certain karate I look for certain things. For example, Matsubayashi will generally have a certain feel. Although many do it differently, there are specific things that one should look for when evaluating certain types of karate. In fact, an arguement could be made that arts that don't have these attributes specific to certain styles are those styles in name only. I can call what I do whatever I want. And infact I can learn with a teacher of a specific art. However, if I fail to learn key lessons which make a certain style distinctive, am I really practicing that style? I know guys who have a shotokan background and have been learning Matsubayashi for a number of years, but their technique excecution is still shotokan and what they are doing is far removed from Matsubayashi.

Marcel,
Read the post you just made from a shotokan person's perspective and what would you say?

I would probably wonder why they took up Matsubayashi if they still wanted to practice their shotokan techs.

There is no evidence of Western or Middle Eastern visits to Okinawa until the Napoleonic era 300 or so years after that.
Hi
If I could prove that wrong would it sell in a book?
I think that might the difference between history study and reading history books. Some persons from more than likely the Mesopotamia area visited Okinawa a long time before the Napoleonic period.
I am speculating that is how the origins of ti began and if I am correct that might be one of the reasons why Medulanet with his wrestling background feels that wrestling co/existed in karate.

Shotokan to my mind is one name for a lot of different practioners versions of a Japanese art.

Maybe we could have a real conversation if you didn't pussyfoot around what you really mean. What is so wrong with the statement I made?

Marcel,
I do not wish to have a conversation with you. You are "not my friend."
