The way some shotokan guys train kata I doubt if any benefit
would be gained full stop.
Anyhow your a heavy weight. I have a good idea. At what point on the timer on any of the videos would you say the karate guy uses age uke as a strike?

I'm not playing footsie with you anymore. If you or jude feel the need to question my training methods , just start a new thread doing so.

"How does Brian train thread" fo sheeze!!

If you really want to know you will have to stop by and see me, homeskillet.

That would be good. Because I seem to get the feeling you perhaps might have missed the techniques the guy's on the videos used. If you dis agree why dont you tell us the techniques they used in one of the videos?

Or even if you watch the videos and inform us if you can spot the use of age uke as a strike and if you manage it could you note down where and at which point using the video timer ?

Ah but this is a technical question and will no doubt be avoided. So would you say it is to be done or avoided?

Put up or shut up? I believe is the phrase.

Jude,

No idea-I did not watch the video as I was too busy amusing myself. I use age uke as a strike all the time though...

What videos?

I don't avoid technical questions jude.

You, however, seem to avoid all questions.

It's still hard to comprehend your random posts.

The question at the start of the thread was
Quote:

Do you believe Machida's success in mma is due to his karate training? Kata?

So if a person doesnt know which techniques he used in his MMA fights then how can the question be answered?

I have and I posted the results from the first video.

How would a person know if kata helped his training if

A A person doesnt know the techniques/ principles he used in his MMA fights?
B Doesnt know which kata he got them from?

Personaly I believe his karate/ kata training assisted along with his other training in his success.

Brian. The very basic kata taught in Okinawan Goju teaches one of the techniques he used. Namely age uke as a strike.
Amongst other things a strike for use in self defence after grabbing a wrist and striking the fingers upwards.
The very basic Okinawan Goju kata.

The ones you posted at the start of the thread???
Remember Machida is in them?? I presume you looked at them as well as posting them?

Do you think the age uke he used came from his own basic kata study?

Jude

Might it be said the discussion is becoming technical even though it is dealing with basic kata so people tend not to answer?
I think so!!

It is not a place I would tend to observe but glad to hear about age uke being used as a strike. Realy basic move he used dont you think? Effective leading to a K.O in the first video. It could be said that at least some practicing karate ka do have an input on the karate thread sometimes.

Pity you didnt find it on the video but I suppose you have other things to do such as glands and stuff. Did you tell Vince by the way?

Did you look at the videos posted at the start of the thread?
So to speak?

Jude

jude,

First of all at our school we do not use the japanese language.

Age uke means up or rising block and we teach that it can be used in a varity of ways. Namely it's a two way action like most blocks. Pulling down on the offending arm and rising underneath the elbow while 'sinking' for a dislocation. Pulling inward and down(chamber) and striking to the throat or side of the neck depending on the offending arm(attack/grab).
There are others..

Grabbing the wrist and striking the fingers?

His fingers or yours?

Machida does Brazillian Shotokan, you do??? and I do American Goju, so why should I be concerned what basic kata are in Okinawwan Goju?

I'm sure they do a rising block somewhere in his karate, don't all karateka?

You aren't even a karate guy, so how would you know? Oh, that's right, you weigh 109kilos.
