we were very fortunate to have a great American collegiate wrestling coach come to glasgow and help us train to compliment our BJJ and MMA grappling. I've also taken some of Karo parisyan's MMA/Judo throws and have been working on them (with great success). Also from studying Muay Thai I work a lot of the Thai clinch does that count as grappling or striking ? interesting.....

clinch is clinch, nearer to wrestling and grappling than striking

I started in BJJ before moving over to Judo, which I prefer. I also did a little bit of wrestling in junior high, almost a decade ago, but some people still comment on how they can see the influence when I roll. Amazing how things can stick with you.

Machado-style BJJ for me. Our instructor also likes to throw in some submissions from Shootwrestling and silat, but our base affiliation is with the Machados.

Peace,
Mike

I've found that these styles don't differ all that much really. The gi changes things here and there, but otherwise there is plenty of overlap.

For instance, shoot-wrestling and submission grappling are essentially one and the same. Many of their techniques are common to BJJ and catch-wrestling. Sombo derived some of its techniques from catch-wrestling as well. Anymore, it's all a mix. Seems like the stylistic lines are blurring at an ever increasing rate. But are they really? Could that be just a misconception?

I coach youth wrestling and I think any kind of grappling is a plus for kids that need discipline and to toughen up a little

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for me, I haven't studied any wrestling but I have been thinking about starting.

No-gi BJJ is basically my foundation, but I incorporate a lot of collegiate wrestling, a little freestyle, and Catch wrestling. Lately I've gotten interested in Sambo for it's leg locks. My bottom game is basically BJJ, while from standing, back mount/quarters and some of my guard passes I use wrestling quite a bit and I add in a lot of the neck cranks and leg locks of Catch wrestling and sambo.

Interesting note on shoot wrestling, it's basically Catch wrestling under rules that don't use pins and do use strikes. Guys like Karl Gotch, Billy Robinson and some others, basically Catch Wrestling masters, trained Fujiwara, Inoki, Funaki, Satoru Sayama and other Japanese pro wrestlers and some of them went on to form Shooto with Sayama (as well as Pancrase). Of course now it includes BJJ and Sambo because over the years the arts have intermixed a lot and now it's all just submission wrestling but soem small differences still exist.
