Honestly, you can learn everything TKD has to offer by the time you reach 3rd dan. There is not some mysterious technique at the end. A master, to me, is one who has effectivley trained and taught TKD and a grandmaster is one who has done that and paid the extra money and time to recieve the title "grandmaster".

Perhaps it depends on exactly what it is he is calling TKD and how long that system takes to get to 3rd Dan?

we had at least three 7+ dans who learned why a technique in a color belt level was at that level just recently;) But then again we have 15 volumes of material and that really just lays the foundations.

Couldn't agree more!

I once heard a 9th degree promoted to GM by the founder who said that he did not really learn TKD or real TKD till he was a 7th degree master. Now that was after 20+ years of training & teaching etc.

The three 7th dans in my region that will be inducted as Senior Master on Friday night would agree with Earl and ITFunity. GM Lee constantly stresses that he can teach something new about Songahm I (white belt) to anyone - which I take to mean that even he is seeing more in it as he continues to train.

By 3rd dan one could learn all of the strikes and blocks perhaps, but not master them. That is inherent in considering 4th dan a full instructor rank.

that's a short, sweet, and to the point kind of response Andy. i agree with you. i would like to ask gyroogi, what dan are you? i would be very surprised that you would make a claim such as that if you were any less that 3rd dan yourself.

I would add that in some palces or schools, maybe this can happen. I would also guess that it can also take place sooner, depending on the depth of the syllabus & quality of the instructor or instruction.
However my point, which may not have been fully grasped is that the TKD that I still study & am still learning, which I do my best to share, is more an Art of SD whose main thrust is to build better lives. Given that, I constantly learn better ways to defend, including discovering that when trained realistically previous held assumptions become clear that they don't work. When it comes to the DO, the longer I keep at it, the more that is revealed to me or should I say, the more that becomes clear or apparent to me.

So IMHO TKD is a life long journey of learning. It would be my desire that more experienced that which has helped me grow so much.
