as many of you know, this is bassai dai.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lF-2ao-DiJs

the move preformed at 1:13 has alot of different applications. i came accross this one a little while ago, and i think with a little modification, of coarse, it cold work well.

It does look a bit like the yamazuki (mountain punch) movement. As you said, there are a lot of other (IMO better) applications for that. I have never quite seen the need for tenshinage against a double grab of the hands, IMO quite an unlikely attack these days when most of us do not carry swords any more.

My favourite application for this is against a hook punch to the head, where the high hand covers against the hook as you move deeply into the attack whilst the low hand punches to the groin, followed by a throw as you turn behind (into the double low inside blocks in the kata).

starting from a double wrist grab is fairly bogus indeed. the principals of the throw i think do rely on your opponent breaking his own ballance for the sake of holding on to your wrists, so it might be a bad application as it stands in the video, however the guys who posted it did not intend it to be one for that move.

im in the "i'd rather hit then throw" boat as well, maybe if it was modifyed a bit. like the low hand grabs the wrist or sleve of the opponent and drags it down and back on an angle and the "over the top" handcould srtike, and the follow through of the shoulder shove them back into a throw?

i think a forum member posted a video application of this move somewhere on the boards, i'll look for it and see if it would fit better then what i've already put up.

Student,

Yep, I think I prefer that possible application.

I find this movement to have some very varied applications. One of my favourites is a throw Funakoshi demo'd in his first book Karate Justu, where the arms loop around the waist and upturn the opponent.

That is the throw I was referring to above or alternatively one hand above the shoulder over the neck and oner below as you perform the turn.
