Hi everyone, I'm a 22 year old guy living in NJ. I was just looking things up online and saw the forum and I am an absolute MMA maniac so it was just the thing for me. I have been watching the UFC and any other MMA fighting available to me since I first saw it back in 2000 or 2001. I saw a few DVD's of the early UFC's and was amazed and started watching any fight I could get my hands on for a few years. About 2 years ago I started training in Muay Thai for a little while before deciding I wanted to start working the overall fight game rather than focus on just the standup and clinchwork I would get from Muay Thai. Since then I've worked on every aspect of fighting I could think of and also started training at a gym with a few more specific trainers. I WANT TO FIGHT. Can anyone give me any answers on how to do this?

Well, at most MMA schools, they would have some info about tournaments. That's the best place I could think of.

Ives is correct. The best way to get into the fight circuit is to join an mma club. They will definitely have links with other clubs and will probably have some kind of amateur competitions. If you like the amateur circuit and do well then I'm sure a reputable gym will have links to a professional camp and you can ease into the game that way.

I don't think I would recommend proffesional mma to anyone at the moment though- just look at the peanuts they get paid.

Even in professional boxing at the height of its popularity, only one in ten professionals made enough money to pursue it full-time. There is money to be made at the top echelons of mma, but is getting there worth the risk to your other life plans?

Good luck whatever you decide to do!

here's a "what if",

what if your job/career choices are art, MMA, & SCUBA? do you think it's then worth the risk??

With all due respect, I find it hard to believe that someone's career choices at a young age (i'm assuming) are anywhere near that limited.

Your chance of making it big in MMA is likely infintesimally small, training because you like it is the way to go.

well that's the reason for stating it as a 'what if'

now then...
does anyone know if those reality tv shows where they take average joes and put them through tests/matches with retired/current pros, aid at all in getting close to the top or are they just entertainment in the likes of the show serviver or last comic standing??

I'm going to treat this as a serious question. No, it does not help you become a pro. Just entertainment.
