Tang Soo Do literally means way of the china hand. So you will see both hard and soft styles in the forms. Hence the Chinese influence. I could give you the whole history but wikipedia does a pretty good job. What in particular would you like to know? As for the differences between the two arts I would have to ask my friend because he went to brown belt in tkd and he now does tsd.

Former TSD, I trained under Ki Yang Yi in NJ until I recieved my third dan and fell to the dark side. Now teaching traditional Jujitsu and Peter Urban Goju Ryu. Never regreted one moment in TSD, it gave me a fabulous MA base and I had a great Korean instructor!

Right hand up...Tang soo!!!!! Opps...I mean Ous!!!!!

I study Tang Soo Do. I started in January and this is the first martial art I have ever studied so I don't know much about it or have anything to compare it to.

of this I am sure: It rocks!!

I used to practice Tang Soo Do, many years ago, I loved the art, If it wasn't for the explosion in prices I'd still be training. I'd also be knocking on the door of 'Masterdom' by now.

I had to start from white again in my currents styles

My favourite Tang Soo Do hyungs were Chil Sung 2 and 3 and Dumon, along with Bassai

Yep - that I am. Gots me a fifth dan in Pukang Tang Soo Do under Bruce Henderson at the Michigan State University Karate Club.

Pukang is a small style of Tang Soo Do that came to the US (and to MSU originally) with Mr. Jay Kim sometime in the 1950s(?). Mr Kim was taught by a monk who defected from N. Korea and ended up teaching phys ed at Mr Kim's high school. Supposedly Pukang came from said monk's monastery on Geumgansan (sp?) mountain in N. Korea.

Mr Kim has since gone on to teach WTF TKD, while Bruce Henderson (one of his former students) decided to stick with PKTSD and propagate the MSU Karate Club. I started my martial education at the age of 14 in WTF TKD, subsequently earning a black belt. When I came to MSU as a freshman I decided to train with the MSUKC in PKTSD because they were tough fighters who practiced head punches and groin kicks - techniques lacking in my WTF TKD training.

I have been out of TSD for a few months due to family schedule conflicting with class times, and have been focusing for the past 1.5 yrs on BJJ training. But I still consider myself a TSD guy, and have been known to have a mean right cross and sharp sidekick when cornered .

Peace,
Mike

TKD_X

I train and teach Ashihara Karate and practice Wado Ryu Karate so I have taken the Japanese Martial Arts Route as Tae Kwon Do didn't interest me as my build is not for jumpy spinny kicks. If I was to take up a korean art again I would take up Hapkido but the nearest is 100 miles away from me!!!!

hehe i'm not built for jump spinny kicks either but i do them nonetheless! not all TKD has jump spinny type kicks. you are probably thinking along the lines of WTF TKD. if i could i would take ITF TKD, WTF TKD, Hap Ki Do, Tang Soo Do, and Gumdo all at the same time.

One question that I need to ask!

My Tang Soo Do instructor never taught application of the forms I'm not too sure of the terminology in Korean but in Japanese it is called Bunkai. That is taking the forms and working with them to find out what each technique is used for. Was this just his lineage that never taught application or does it happen in a few schools?

Iain Abernethy’s books and courses visit this very concept and where low blocks are used they are actually throws etc

All because the fist is closed doesn’t mean it is a punch!!! It could be a grab etc.

Naifanchi cho dan the leg lift could actually be a leg sweep or leg break in reverse.

What is your take on this doe you teach these aspects? Do you get taught these aspects or does your instructor make it up as he/she goes along?

I don’t wish to offend only to find answers

Well this is complicated. Let me try to explain. I always thought Tang Su Do was a form of Karate. From my understanding many Koreans left to study abroad, mostly in Japan, some in China & elsewhere. While there they also took up the MAs, mostly Karate. When they returned to Korea they started to open up schools to teach what they learned abroad. However many started to call it Tang Su Do, so they didn't have to use hated Japanese names.
We know from history the Oh Do kwan eventually led to some new techniques & the ITF. The Ji Do kwan, like the Oh Do kwan was Shotokan Karate based. They also developed new techniques which eventually led to the WTF or Kukki Olympic sparring TKD.
However I am not sure of the development of TSD & was wondering if they were more or less still Karate, with less of a Koreanization, for lack of a better term.
Thanks
