This is the style of Aikido I practiced.

I believe he was awarded the rank of 4th Dan in Judo and 8th Dan in Aikido.

Kenji Tomiki's study of Judo influenced his study of Aikido. While working at Waseda University in Japan, he tried to set up an Aikido club in the University. As the university only granted access to the gymnasium facilities to competitive sports, the university would not allow Tomiki to setup an Aikido club as it was not a sport. To get round this, Kenji Tomiki came up with a set of rules to govern a newly created of Aikido Randori. As such, the University allowed him to set up his club as his Aikido now had a competitive aspect to it.

Usehiba Sensei and the Honbu weren't too happy about this though. So Kenji Tomiki continued to refine his Aikido as he saw fit, developing the use of Aikido using randori.

So that is the basic history as I know it!!

Acutally Tomiki Sensei was awarded his 8th dan in Judo from the Kodokan in 1964. He had his 4th dan decads before this. If you do not know facts it is best not to present misinformation.

As for your story about Ueshiba and the hombu not being happy with Tomikie Sensei I would like to hear you back that one up. Tomikie Sensei taught at the hombu when he visited until after Ueshiba Sensei's death. The relationship is fairly well docutmented for anyone doing the research instead of passing on 'the history as they know it.'

The terms Shodokan and Tomiki are interchangeable i.e. Shodokan Aikido = Tomiki Aikido.

Not exactly accurate. All Shodokan Aikido is Tomiki Aikdo but not all Tomiki Akido is Shodokan. Accuracy in these matters is important.

Re his dan rank, I didn't mean for it to be definitive. I used the term "I believe" I thought that would be sufficent to articulate this point.

As to the use of Shodokan/Tomiki term, you are correct as I understand it. I should've worded it more carefully.

Re Tomiki and Ueshiba, there are any number of reports about problems between Tomiki and Usehiba about the direction Tomiki took his Aikido:

http://www.aikidojournal.com/article?articleID=70

I wasn't there, so I can't tell you what DID happen or how well they did/did not get on.

As for everything else, as I finished what I said with "That is the history as I know it" If anyone accepted totally what I said, despite the fact I made sure to select wording that would indicate what I was saying was speculative, well, I'd be worried for that person. Short of putting in a lengthy disclaimer about how reliable what I was told by my old Aikido teacher, who himself was informed by many others and so on, I don't think I could've done much more.

We can listen to who we like and read whatever we wish, but unless you were there and knew all the key players very well, anything else we come up with will always be speculative/ 2nd/3rd/4th...hand.

What I did write was done to help create a discussion on Shodokan Aikido. This is what it has done.

We are all on here to learn. If you have something to share, please share. I wonder for instance, if you knew much about the technical differences between Shodokan and Tomiki Aikido? I have heard about these, but haven't been able to find out where they differ.

Any information/correction always welcome.

You spelled Aikido wrong.

Evidently accuracy isn't as important as it seems...

Hi All,

I'm not one to typically revive ancient threads, but if anyone is still interested in Shodokan / Tomiki Aikido in Canada, please check out our website here - www.mushinkan.ca

On a separate note, Tomiki attained 9th Dan in Judo before he passed away I believe.

Best regards
