Several of the works seem to have been written by different people. Even in MacBeth, the scene with the witches dancing is so completely different from other scenes, lyrically. There is also some suggestion that Francis bacon wrote some works while even Christopher Marlowe has been suggested as an author (after his death was faked).

In a word...No.

This is an old debate and while it has many Eng Lit grad students duking it out with Theatre Majors at the Pub, it is little more then a conspricy theroy and should be given the respect accordingly.

The debate that Shakespeare was a different person, has always had more legs but has never swayed Shakespearen scholars,

The important point to know is the same person wrote the works of Shakespeare. There is no credible debate on this point.

I took a 400 level course on this in college, and my Prof (a Shakespearen Scholar) once told the class, " if anyone ever walks up to you at a cocktail party and tells you Shakspeare didn't write his own plays, you tell them to F*** off!"

I'm not going to honor his request, but I do share his position on the subject.

You can fool some of the people some of the time,
but not all of the people all of the time....

If the historical Shakespeare was a fake, or a cover for someone, he would have been found out during his lifetime, considering the sheer volume of plays over a lengthy period of time. He would have to display a very high level of literacy AND detailed knowledge of his own plays (seeing that he held himself out to have written them all by himself) in polite Edwardian high society.

Any MacSpeare would not have survived.

Funny thing (and why I remember it to this day) was he was a quiet, polite articulate man, I imagine he dropped the F bomb maybe once year if that.

Watching him swear was like watching Barney Fife use a jack hammer.

I distrust everything and everybody until given a reason to trust. I believe trust has to be earned whether by a person or a product. For a person I may not come out and say it forthright however I will give leeway and wait for them to earn it. I've been burned too many times so have the defenses up at all time.
