Private forums...you'd be surprised at the vermin that can hide out in private forums.

a public forum

Hmmmm. Don't agree there. The diversity of opinion of public forums would seem to reduce the "distrust" factor, since no one is beholden to any one particular POV.
Less chance of the "cult mentality".

Just because people are free to say what they believe does not make them trustworthy. I tend to enjoy the advice I get on this foum and the arguments... I mean discussions on this or that. But, I still wouldn't say I trust public forums. The very fact that we are free to say what we want (more or less) means we could also be lying through our teeth. ( well our fingers, or, you know what I mean)

Bottom line, I research most things on the internet from getting maps to a medical procedure some scalpel jockey wants to try out on me. But, the first rule of getting information from the net, and yes that includes this forum, is "DON'T TRUST ANYTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET!" Why? Simply becuase there is no way to tell if the person you're talking to is professional, professional drunk, male, female, other, multiple PHD holder or chronic bed wetter, rapist, murderer, dolphin hater, and all the way up the most dangerous internet creature of all... the Forum Troll.

Yes I know you said "reduces the distrust factor" and you're probably right there. But, my post still stands. The only members on this forum I'm positively sure study some martial art or another are the ones (very few) I've seen through posted vidz or pics. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of long-time well-informed MAists here. But no way to know for sure, right?

You make a valid point when referring to individuals. But I was referring to the overall gist one can get from a public forum. Tends to be more trustworthy (overall) than limited access forums, IME.

That honesty may not come across as respectful or friendly, LOL. It's not always nice to hear that you or your style or school or instructor may *ahem*......need work.

But sometimes that advice is right on.
