Could someone tell in what whay is Hakko Denshin Ryu similar and/or different from Daito Ryu? I've discovered a dojo in Ann Arbor (close to home) and I'm curious to learn more about the style.

Thanks

Hakko Denshin Ryu is essentially Hakko Ryu Jujutsu. There were very little, if any changes made it's mostly a name change.

Hakko Ryu grew out of Daito Ryu and there is very little difference. I have traning in both as well as Aikido which also grew out of Daito Ryu.

If you are asking because you are interested in studying Hakko Denshin Ryu would not have any reservations about reccomending it to you.

On the other hand, if you visit the school and find out that is not what you want, there is Kushida Takeshi and his Yoshokai Aikido thee, which is essentially Yoshinkan. I think there is also a Hakuhoryu/Daitoryu group there in Ann Arbor. Hakuho Ryu should not be confused with Hakko Ryu.

But seriously take a look at and consider the Hakko Denshin Ryu. This is an excellent group of martial artists wih a very strong art.

Thanks for the info. I checked the hakko denshin ryu website for the Ann Arbor dojo and found out that they have a drop in fee for anyone interested in checking them out. Between reading up on hakko denshin ryu and seeing some videos I get the feeling that it might be a good fit for me both philosophically and physically.

Thanks again,

Tom H.

Take one of those "drop in" classes and see how it goes.
Let us know and come back if you have specific questions or decide to look for another school in the area. I will give you contact information for Kushida Sensei/Yoshokai and the Daito Ryu group.

Finally...someone who seems familier with yoshokai and Kushida Sensei. I'll send you a private message with some questions and comments about Yoshokai.

I dropped in to the Koyama dojo in Ann Arbor this past Saturday and worked on the first few basic shodan techniques. It seems like good stuff with the potential to be brutally effective (and a whole lot of fun to boot). I find hakko denshin ryu's use of pressure points especially interesting. FWIW, as I've look into several different aikido styles and "aiki arts" over the past few years I find it facinating that depending on the style of aikido or type of aiki art in question the same basic techniques are used but are often done with subtle differences and applied in different ways from art to art. Hopefully I'll make it back to the Koyama dojo in a few weeks (just not ready to give up the semi sorta kinda like aiki jutsu-but not really-hybrid art that I've been practicing these past few years).

Peace,
Tom H.

I knew you would like the Hakko Denshin Ryu.
What is it that you are studying now?

For the past 6 years I've been studying what's called Nafsirruh Aiki Bujutsu. It was created by K.A. Shakoor in Detroit. His main influences were Sanuces Ryu (he studied with a student of Moses Powell and received a rokudan), and Vee Arnis Jitsu (actually studied directly with Florendo Visitacion and received a sandan). He has also studied toyama ryu, aikido, and has a sandan in judo. For about the last 15 years he has also been studying t'ai chi, xing yi, and ba gua. All that being said, to me the style looks most similar to sanuces ryu with more of an aiki influence and less of a judo influence. Some people call it a "mutt style" a "bastardized style" etc, due to the multiple influences. Either way I actually love the art but my schedule hasn't really enabled me to train with Shakoor very consistently for the last couple of years. FWIW, the thing I liked about Hakko Denshin Ryu was that even though it is clearly aiki in nature it is also very combat ready, Similar to Shakoors art. I hope to make it back to the Koyama dojo in the future but I'm not ready to write off Nafsirruh yet.

Peace,
Tom H.

A lot of good things grew out of Sanuces Ryu. I saw a group do a demo in Philadelphia. It was awesome. The Vee Arnis Jitsu gets criticized for it's funny name, but it is also a dynamic and powerful art geared toward the streets.

It would be hard to give that up.

I think with that kind of training and you have good things to say about the Hakko Denshin Ryu says a lot for Hakko Denshin Ryu.

Agreed. Frankly, I find it somewhat frustrating to have to explain myself to folks in the more traditional martial arts that what I do is legit. That being said, there is a part of me that wants to do an art where there are more schools available of the style. Either way, it's pretty likely that I will give hakko denshin ryu another try in the not to distant future.
