No, the purpose of karate is to break people doing those other practices.

Besides training with other karate stylists (Tang Soo Do, Shorin-ryu, Shotokan, etc.) I've also trained with aikido people and wrestlers. My various sensei also had backgrounds in kempo, judo, boxing, kuta and tai chi (which I want to start doing myself).

Yes I cross train in boxing, ground grappling and wresltling. I also cross train in other arts just to know the possibilities and how they move.

My purpose is to add to my base knowing the possibilities you can deduct the appropiate responce.

Sure the human body can only move in limited fashion but the small differences can mean alot. I've taken something of value from almost every art that I've trained.

Janx,

You'll also have to define what karate is before even considering the cross training stuff. If you look at Daido Juku or some of the K-1 Grand Prix (sponsored originally by Seido Karate) fights, these are both splits from Kyokushin and show a lot of formative boxing within the basic syllabus of those karate styles.

I know I have trained BJJ elswhere and also within the style of karate I practice. My current karate instructor studied with the Machados for three years (?). He's also studied Judo and grappling elsewhere. I have taken Judo as an ancillary practice from my karate at an exclusive BJJ school before blowing out my knee. Boxing is perhaps more foundational in the hand techniques to the style of karate I practice than other schools elsewhere. We have had both amatuer boxers and one pro in our school. But it is still karate.

You cross train because its fun and functional. But whole arts are hard to categorize if you haven't seen what the other guy's doing when he practices.

I'll add to Buttefly's thoughts and mention that it is not uncommon today to find high ranked Karateka with fairly extensive backgrounds in Judo or Ju Jitsu.

I'm sure there are still insular karate groups that reject anything else but I think there are far less of those than say 10 years ago or so.

I second those statements, there takes a dense man to not learn from the past or know his weakness and not fill it.

It's too late for me to get into judo; it would have had to come first. Talking with a judoka, he was saying "then you put your elbow into his armpit to help with the throw". But I'm looking at that sternum I can put my elbow into... After 35 years of strinking I can't be retrained.

Actually i've run into this same problem when I first started cross training, you constantly have a voice in your head saying "hit him" lol, even if it's just a Jujitsu kata type environment this is a problem, say nothing of actually grappling, but you get used to it after a bit I think.

It shouldn't be a problem. Grappling is about position, just like karate. If you are in a position to hit your opponent then you are doing good and you can continue to transition to improve your position. This is training and working to gain new skills and improve old ones. If you train with the mindset to obtain a position advantageous to striking, then you are actually developing skills to improve your striking when training grappling.

I actully don't crosstrain. I do however spar people that don't do karate, but I do not take up classes of their martial art. It's like once you have been put in an armbar 40x, on the 40 first, you tend to remember what people need to do to excute it; therefore, learn a defence against it. Grappling with Karate just feels so natural now that I couldn't see my self not doing it.
