I've seen many in the mma ring getting criticized here. If you could commit the time to training who would you fight and beat? From looking at the tuf series I believe I would be a good competitor. I think I have the tenacity it takes to train like a wildman. I think I could beat some of those guys with the training I have now even. I'd like to fight Tim Silvia. To me, he's just a big slob. His size has gotten him where he is now. Doesn't ever look different. They talk about how tough his training is, well, I don't see it. He is always looking out of shape and gasses easily. Let me hear how wrong I am.

Yes he looks like a slob but u can't deny the fact that he hits hard. He is one of the top heaveyweights for a reason, it wasnt given to him, he has beaten many good fighters to get where he is. So looks dont mean anything. U can look like a slob, weakling etc and it still dont matter. I dont like Silvia but u gotta give him respect. Not just Silvia but any fighter. Never underestimate any opponent. Bow out with respect from a TKD/BAGUA MARTIALIST

Heavy weights can look soft but be decieving.
Anyway, its not about who you think you could beat, but what you've actually done.

chris leben. Spends more time crying than training, never looks comfy on the ground. Hits like a girl. Dont like him so i could find the aggression to fight him easily, and i would have a forty pound weight advantage. Sleepy time for leben

Hey Brian, I would have agreed with you up until I saw him fight Noguiera in UFC 81. Gotta admit he looked pretty sharp there!

Thankyou Cordfor actually answering my question.I think you could beat Leben too with the right training. For everyone else. "It's what you've done." Yes,but being a single father with a fulltime job + overtime and lots of other responsibilities I doub I could compete. Given the opportunit to train full time I would be a good competetitor.
Now, please answer. Sheesh, everyone is so serious.
Matt,
Like I said Sylvia is good because of his size. Otherwise, he's a big, sloppy , and has butter abs.

I think a lot of people could beat that Meeks guy from TUF,lol.

Hey Brian
I don't know if Cord has the show yet in the UK but over here it's called Pro's vs Joe's.
It allows "average Joes" (Generally guys who have done sports all their lives) to compete against "Pro's" (retired and some a bit out of shape). It's quite fun, with the requisite amount of trash talking, but even with the retired Pro's taking it easy, it's apparent that the average guy has nowhere near the ability of a Pro and even less understanding of what the Pro's can actually do.
Most amusing moments so far;
Joe's trying to stop Ricky Williams running at them. One Joe had to quit after being run over (literally) and hurting his neck.
Joe's trying to stop Randy Coture submitting them. After the event and being submitted numerous times, and lets face it Randy isn't a submission specialist, all the Joe's were in the changing rooms saying they'd never experienced pain like that before.
Joe's boxing a 3 minute round with Arturo Gatti. Despite being outweighed considerably by the Joes, he hit one guy with a hook who fell to his knees and couldn't rise, and and another with a body shot that made the guy resemble a sack of potatoes.
And all the Pro's were clearly taking it easy against the Joe's and trying not to hurt them.
I'm sorry fella's but you Joe's are what you are. Joe's, who will never even understand what it takes to compete at the highest levels. You want to step into a ring with someone who's at the top of their game and take them on. Dream on suckers.

Please I want to fight Randy Couture and Rampage Jackson at the same time, 1 guy for each of my fists!
But I second John's comments, unless you have ever been around pro athletes you probably don't have an understanding of good these guys really are. It takes more then just training, you also need the genetic royal flush to compete at an elite level.
I tried to make this point once before and got filleted like a fish on Friday for it...

I might have to agree with John; especially since I'm a Pros vs. Joes fan. I'm a Joe for sure and in my best days I had some phenomenal game days in wresling, football and soccer but nothing like a Pro. I think with adequate training I could hold my own against quite a few guys but I'd never rise to the top. I would get to see a lot of canvas whether it is from my back or face down in my own spit and blood. Nope, it would be fun but not for me. They say the training is the hardest part and I believe that 100% and I know I don't have the ability to train like many of them and that high of a calibre. I weight lift and do martial arts religiously and have for over 10 years however I'm not the cream of the crop.

I agree totaly, but keep in mind that leben is the only guy to lose TWICE in the same series where he was trying to become a pro fighter. He got his shot because of the hystrionics he pulled on that show, not his fighting ability. That makes him a 'Joe' as well IMO.

Now now, lets not make an ASSumptions. I have trained, and trained with many high level athletes (national/international) from various disciplines, and have never felt completely out of my depth, and if I do say so myself, i feel that being shortlisted for my National under 21's rugby squad, before a heartbreaking (and nearly neck breaking) injury put a stop to fullfilling my potential, means that I might qualify as an 'above average' Joe.
Besides, this is a fun thread, its not supposed to be taken seriously.

Hey Cord I am keeping it light hearted I promise you. The experience level which you note is similar to some of the Joe's on the show and they get trashed. It's as simple as that. A story from many years ago; I fenced internationally for 13 years repesenting both England and GB. I was at a tournament in Huddersfield and fencing in an early round. The top fencers generally use the early rounds as a warm up for the more serious fencing later. I fenced a guy who was a county level fencer. I beat him 5-1 with very little effort. After our fight, he took me aside and explained how he thought I was a bit lucky in our fight. I said, "What do you mean, the result was fairly clear." He then gave me a lengthy explanation of how at the beginning of the fight he hadn't warmed up properly and that had given me the first couple of hits, that he then got an off target hit which had only just missed, he then got his hit and if he'd been lucky that I might have been a bit nervous and he could have exploited that. According to a good freind of mine, I exploded at the top of my voice so all 300+ fencers at the event could hear, "F**k me Ray, you don't even KNOW how good I am!!!" (I was such an angry young man in those days!) Sorry Cord, you're a JOE!!! By the way, I reckon that I could trash Liddell

The problem is that without at least some kind of evidence to go on its entirely theoretical. Anyone at all could open their mouth and say "I could do this" or "I could do that" if only they had the time to train but its kind of empty, isn't it?

Oi!! THIS IS FOR FUN!!! ITS NOT A SERIOUS THREAD!!!!
Look, this is where Brian is coming from- we all (who watch MMA at least) sit in judgement of the fights we see. We, as spectators, all size up the competitors performances, we have opinions regarding their strengths and weaknesses as we see them. Now what Brian has done is come up with thread FOR FUN , that allows you to apply that critical skill to yourselves, and having analysed your own fighting strengths and weaknesses, come up with an MMA star who you feel would be an oponent that would best play into your hands. If you think its lame, then dont post. if you think that it might be a fun exercise, or a light hearted way of exploring your self critique, then lets hear ya
Again, I chose Leben, because he makes hard work of journeyman oposition, lacks mental focus, has a very open guard, cant punch worth a sh1t, and is about 40 lbs lighter than me. From this you can see how much I respect UFC ahletes in general, because any with genuine professional level skill would take me out nice and quick.

St. Pierre and Silva are great fighters. I had the opportunity to train at a seminar with GSP and he makes it look so effortless and I expect the same from Silva. On my best day I couldn't beat either on their worst day.

I am a lightweight and there is some lightweight fighters in the WEC that I wasn't very impressed with. I feel given full time training I would be more than willing to step in the ring with quite a few of them. Of UFC fighters though, I am having trouble thinking of any I would be pretty suited for. I agree with that a few of the TUFF guys weren't exactly up to snuff.

In regards to the TUFF guys, many good fighters but there were a few that I would consider substandard and I can honestly say I would do no worse. At 39 I'm not up to the rigorous training nor the fighting however my work ethic for weight lifting over 10 years and martial arts over 5 would still put me on par of a few of the TUFF guys.

Remember this is all in fun and in my day I've been known as the Araon Banks or Don King of Martial art. I don't want to play arm chair with myself, I know my limitations.
But I'd like to see just for fun winner takes all. BrianS vs. Tank Abbot or Wanderlei Silva or Bob Sapp or Tito Ortiz. Victor Smith vs. Bas Rutten or Royace Gracie old hats Ed Morris vs. Cro Cop, Arloski, Antioni Nogueira, David Loiseau old but lets make it easy on him, I like him so much. Cord vs. Bob Sapp, Tim Silva, Arloski, Gonzaga, Lesnar smallman vs big men. Medulant vs. Tim Silva, Gonzaga, Arloski, Mir, Forest Griffin bc I like him. Headkikr vs. Cro Cop, Dan Frye, BJ Penn, GSP Zan-Zachi vs. Tito Ortiz, Matt Huge, Koschek,Ice man Chen-Zen vs. Wanderlei Silva, Matt Huge, GSP a$$ kicking time. WhiteDragon vs. Belfort, GSP, Huge or Cummo Drewdragon vs. Cro Cop, any Silva, BJ Penn, Nogueira Gojuwarrior vs. Bob Sapp, Dan Handerson, Matt Serra, Cro Cop BrianS vs. Tim Silva, Sapp, Lesnar, Cro Cop, Chris Lebien BS has judo training he gets to fight twice. CVV vs. Rich Franklin, Koscheck, Gonzaga or Tank Abott Kimo678 vs. Mir, Mir or Lesnar or Bob Sapp Harlan vs. Bob Sapp my money on the smaller person with better technique here. I have no doubt at all that I could defeat Tito. He is old, out of shape, slow, and as far as I am concerned, he was never really a fighter. Tito Ortiz? What! Are you nuts man? I was talking about Tito Jackson, Michael's brother. Tito Ortiz would kill me in a match. What are you on man? Put the pipe down bud. Sheesh!

Not being funny, but Sapp is the one I would be least worried about- he hates being hit- you can see the fear in his eyes, and he nearly turns his back if someone unleashes a fast combo. Then when Cro-cop hit him, he cried!!! Now, being kicked by cro-cop- i could understand a few boo hoo's. But it was a freakin Jab that dropped him, and it wasn't a 'sweet spot' KO, it was a pain reaction, 'waaah I want my mommy!!!!' give up embarassment. That is not the reaction of a professional fighter.
The others i could get around easy- I would trade tips on ab workouts for an easy fight against Sylvia, and would distract Arlovski by asking him beard grooming advice, and then 'bam' pick up John McCarthy and use him like a baseball bat to KO Andre

Man, WTF gave you the idea I was a heavyweight? I'm like 170lbs/78kg!
Since you are putting me against all the wrong opponents, I will be forced to use all the wrong techniques:
Me vs Gonzaga - I TKO him with a vicious 1-2 to the groin
Me vs Cro Cop - Toe kick to the eye FTW
Me vs Bob Sapp - I pimp-slap Bob on the back of the neck, hard as I can. He drops like a stone, crying.
Me vs Tim Silva/Kimo - When Kimo goes to kill me, I curl up in the fetal position, screaming that Tim made me do it, saying that Tim told me it was not worth his time to fight Kimo himself. Tim and Kimo annihilate each other.
On my way out of the ring, I kick Big John McCarthy in the sack. Why? Because he was there. Then I kick Dana White in his sack. Why? So Randy Couture will carry me on his shoulders out of the ring.
Me FTW.

Cord I felt that way also that Bob Sapp was a big pipe dream until I saw him get his a$$ whipped by Ernesto Hoops, he got decked two to three times fought on with a broken rib. Ernesto tried trading with him instead of kicking his legs and moving. Ernesto was (too quickly) TKO's with those ugly loopin punches one lifted him off the ground. Sapp if can't do anything else he can hit, now I didn't say he can punch but whatever he doing it hurts.
I also seen him submit somebody, he also appeared on the Pros vs. Joes show he is a awesome human being.
Big as you are you can handle the others punch of punch, ground game for ground game for sure ha,ha,ha.
Kimo### sorry I messed your numbers up, but anty up what would you do with them?
Personally it would be a honor to get my a$$ whipped by any of these guys, I'd rather tap out then be KTFO, it might be just just me, but its just competition.

Mattj Damn we do have a active imagination don't we.
I put people in the ring not by weight but how much crap (even if its factual)they talk. I figure you talk big you fight big. If you're a a$$hole you fight tuff a$$holes. You wanta answer Micheal Jackson's Cd question Whose Bad? Put it on the line. I'd just like to see ya get, creamed. I also figure you let Sapp Ko'd you with one of those ugly a$$ punches you couldn't look at yourself in a mirrior for a week ashamed that it even touched you, he telegraphs a mile away.
Eye kicking (I like it but) is against the rules and they are wearing grion cups so it not gonna hurt that much. You kick Dana White in the sack then who is gonna sign your Check?

OK lets play some make believe here.
I don't watch UFC that much so I don't have too much to go on, but let me start with Mr Mir.
We are about the same size (if I was training full time I might be 10lbs less or so, give or take)
Clearly I don't want to be on the ground with him so I would work him from a distance stay out of his insie/takedown and when he went for the take down, I unload an upper cut that would pop his head up like a rockem sockem robot.
NEXT!
Bob Sapp...he is a beast but slow, I'd wear him out, losts of low legs and fast jabs, stay out of his wheel house and chop him down like a redwood.
Brock Lesnar...I don't match up well, he is fast, strong and can run over me. So I would let him take me down, pound me sensless and just when it looks like it's curtains....I'd use a jumping scissor kick and choke him out like a man!
Not some pansy knee bar.

MrMoyer vs. Cro Cop, r Bisping, r Rich Franklin, Bob Sapp
Well, luckily I am a heavy weight @ 6'2", 360lbs. :-)
Hmm, Cro Cop, I would do sicne I haven't been impressed with him lately and it seems every since that knocked out head kick he hasn't been the same.
Oh yeah, I would definitely take on Bisping. I love him as a fighter and person, but I think I could get a knock out as long as he don't take me do the ground. But I am not sure what is groudn game is like.
Rick Franklin, Nah, don't want that fight....
And mos def I would take on Sapp....
Ok, let's invite the pro's to the next East Coast Get together.

Armchair fighters? Huh, they're nothing. You try taking on a couple of sofas and then we'll talk!

I think if I really buckled down and committed to it physically and mentally that I could train to fight, and beat, that old guy that dances around in the large glasses on the six flags commercials while the organ plays in the background.
But only if I really worked at it.
And only if I could keep that organ from kicking on - cause when it plays - he's unbeatable.

No, never in my wildest dreams with infinite amount of training do I think I could beat George St. Pierre or be of the same calibur of some of the fighters.

Even though I'd lose in a fair fight to him, Matt Hughes seems like someone I could get behind fighting. Presuming it's not in a ring and he's not expecting me I might even have a shot.

Hmm, this is interesting. I think training full time I could nail that guy who's pillow Leben [censored] on, fairly easily, then Meeks (I dont even know who he is but he sounds pretty bad), Josh Rafferty, Chris Leben is a BIG maybe (especially if it went to the ground), the WEC light heavy champion (he is slow and sloppy so that's an easy one just thought I'd throw that out there) and of course it would be a no brainer that I could take Sylvia (and lose by the way). And hey probably some of the old fighters like Keith Hackney and the huge guy he fought! Seriously, Sylvia is very very boring, but a very smart and effective fighter, he certainly has won against some good competition for example Arlovski, Vera, Monson, and he at least wasn't finished by Couture and lasted awhile against Noguiera. He may not be top 5, and probably not top 10 but he is still a good fighter. Arlovski was the big win (twice I might add). That DEFINITELY counts for something.
