TKD is getting "bashed" because people have finally figured out that building a martial art primarily around kicking is not the best choice for self-defense. TKD certainly some great kicks, and strong kicking skills are a fine thing to have. But they are just not as basic to effective self-defense as strong boxing and grappling skills, which very few TKD schools teach.

That said, TKD has been, and still is, an extremely successful martial art in terms of what its promoters wanted to accomplish. Almost from the beginning, TKD was envisioned as a mass participant sport (as opposed to a mass spectator sport, like boxing or MMA). The idea was that almost anyone, from small children to old ladies, ought to be able to participate in TKD if they desired. In that sense TKD has succeeded brilliantly. It is still probably the most widespread martial art in the world.

wow, this thread is still going lol.. Must be a record smile

I just signed on after almost 3 years of not visiting and come to see a 2015 post smile AWESOME!!!!

Well, I have evolved and developed my own Lineage of TKD over the years. I guess it was a natural progression through the years training in other arts like Jiujitsu, Judo, Goju Ryu, Capoeira, Bagua Zhang, etc...and of course I learned a lot while teaching. It was during teaching that I noticed what worked and what did not in my opinion and adjusted accordingly. smile

Nice to be back and hope to see what is new here.

Bow out with respect,

Sounds like the natural progression of many martial artists.

You spend years learning the "system" then you spend years stripping it down to what works for to speak.
I did battle with ignorance today.......and ignorance won. Huey.
