Sho, I have two responses to your assertions. One, is that before classical kata training should begin, there are certain "prerequisites." Such as strength, speed, agility, and cardio development, basic striking training, and grappling training. Most pre WWII karate experts understood this and followed this training regimine. In addition to this, many grapplers' game plans go out the window once you start to hit em, hard. A grappling base and using striking as a primary attack on the ground enables the karate fighter to "hang" with grapplers on the ground by simply not playing their game. Now, as far as striking versus grappling in kata it is simple. If a finishing strike/s or a joint lock cannot be successfully applied to an opponent within a short period of time then kata tells you not to stay on the ground, but get up.

To put it simply trying to force an effective ground submission against someone who specialises in that range and method is going to be hard work for a karateka, MMA has shown this to be true.

Hi Jim.
While I would like to agree ground fighting is a specialist art can I ask why the term submission? From my studies of kata I seem to see a lot of infered attempted fast breaks/ snaps at least damage to the joints as opposed to applying pressure to cause a submission. Admittedly they seem in the main to follow strikes

Do you honestly think you have a way to "prove" that a grappling technique taught in a style of Okinawan Karate is definitively a technique from a certain Chinese art?

Zach

Hello.

I think that karate started with te then had different arts mixed in.
To make sense of certain kata then an attempt to trace the
techniques is worth while looking at.
That is what I am doing. What I think at this moment in time doesnt matter.
I will attempt to read the material you posted.
You would be wasting you time telling me I am wasting my time doing this kind of research.
It would seem I am looking along the same lines as others who have gone before me with the use and building of
Strenght speed suppleness technique etc etc
Have a read of others input on the forum.
Having said that if anything else occurs to you about writers etc then please feel free to post them.

There isnt much point in adding the "Do I honestly think" etc etc
because I am gathering information. Not to much of the intense analising of it yet.

Jude

No need to get to excited just yet Zach.
The word should have been spelt analysing or
analyzing. Either way that part wont be for some time.

analysing
analyzing.
analising

not anal-ising that might be considered painfull.
Bit like tender-ising

Three different ways of how people spell the same word.
Bit like chi, ki etc.
So I suppose it will be ok in scrabble.
I guessed Zac would assume the "wrong end" of the meaning thus the "no need to get excited part" and the mainstream choice's given later with the alternative spelling's.
