I've been wearing reading glasses for the last five years or so. Now, I don't mind wearing them in and of themselves - after all, I'm a Professional Computer Geek, and it's part of the uniform - but the dang things get dirty fast.

The slightest smudge gets on a lens, and it's like looking through an under-achieving kaleidoscope.

I consider taking them off, but I know that road ends in Headacheopolis.

Ordinarily, I live with it, but it eventually drives me batscat.

I go and wash my lenses, and all is right with the world. Then I scratch my forehad, the tip of my thumb makes incidental contact with a lens, and suddenly, my world is a Dali painting.

Ok, I'm over-exaggerating here, but it's a huge nuisance for me.

I wish I had my perfect vision back. In my younger days, I could tell you the name of a flea's girlfriend by reading his tattoo from 100 yards away.

Ok, now that I've vented, what minor details of daily life drive you three steps from going all Budd Dwyer?

The price of glasses! My husband just bought three pair (a pair of safety glasses for work which we will be reinbursed for, a pair of sunglassees, and a everyday wear pair). I didn't even want to know what it was going to run us so I took our daughter to Gymboree and did a little shopping. I got the credit card bill in the mail yesterday and opened it up, $600. The balance was paid off the month before so ALL of it was from LensCrafters. I thought I was going to die! I, myself, have 20/20 vision so I have no idea what glasses cost. UGH! $600 for 3 pair! I guess it's not too bad but just to be hit with it like that. About $200 of it is my husband's work's responsibility so that's nice.

As for things that drive nuts? Snow Birds. You know the people. The ones that migrate from up north to spend the winter in the south. They act like their car is going to blow up if it gets above 55. THE SPEED LIMIT IS 70 PEOPLE! EITHER DO IT OR GET OFF MY ROADS!

I get 60% off frames, and 80% off lenses.

Re: Snow Birds

Let two snow flakes fall out of the sky in Northern Virginia!

Some people drive 10mph with their flashers on.
Some people abandon their vehicles, and hoof it.
Some have 4WD Behemoths and DRIVE LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW!
Some seemingly close their eyes, unbuckle their belts, and steer with their buttocks.

Then there's the 0.001% who behave as if they've seen this falling death dust before, lessen their speed slightly, and drive normally, while attempting not to be vehicularly murdered by the maniac drivers who were once partially sane, but have since lost both hope, and touch with reality.

ZZ and I discussed it through PM. I just need to get my husband to get off his duff and do it. Thanks though! Is there a PDF file that can be emailed?

I wore glasses/contacts for 40 yrs. Last month, I got Lasik.

Now my eyesight is SO good, I actually have x-ray vision...it's not all it's cracked to be. Nothing exciting about seeing a mess of bones & teeth.

Wow... I didn't know that eyeglasses would be such a hot-button issue! I'm glad I'm not alone here!

Are there any other mundane, every-day annoyances that you all have to live with, but yet drive you completely apespit?

Another thing that annoys me are people who don't think. Case in point:
A few months ago, a local middle school had a bat fly into the school during a football game. A few students in the school killed the bat and called animal control and they came out the next morning to remove the animal. The bat tested positive for rabies. The news reported the story and at the end added, "Animal control advises to never handle a wild animal no matter how innocent the animal looks. The best thing to do is to call animal control during normal business hours." Now last I checked, bats are nocturnal animals and "normal business hours" are typically over no later than 6 MAYBE 6:30 pm. Bats are just waking up at this point. So what am I supposed to do if a bat flies into my house at 10 pm? "Oh excuse me Mr. Bat, please stay here until the morning so animal control can deal with you."

I paid just over $400 for two pair myself and that was after insurance. Of course it was a matter of choice and not a need. I got a pair of prescription Raybans and a nice pair of everyday wear glasses. I could have gotten my everyday glasses free through the Navy but the frame options are slim and less than appealing. Yes i'm a vain a$$.

I can get Lasik for free too but the wait is a good year or two. I don't mind the wait...i'm here anyway but i can't get on the list here i have to wait till i leave Greece.

Parents who let their kids run wild anywhere.

People who talk on cellphones in the movies.

85% of all drivers on my roads (Yes, they are mine. The govenor has made a new law and declared them such).

Christmas shoppers who knock you down and dont say excuse me or even acknowledge your presence.

Working for someone who is an absolute moron.

Sales calls of any nature on a Saturday morning.

Not remembering where I put my damn keys when I am late for work.

And there are many others but that is it for now. Despite all of these, I still have relatively good days almost everyday. Family and friends are wonderful cures for the things that mess with you daily.

My son, my own little happy pill.

Have to wear them. Had them since I was young, and had a foot go through my eye about 12 years ago through some hard sparring.

After my head was done with being stuck in a vice and anaesthetic put into the eye with several sterilized tweezers peeling back layers of my cornea, I was told I have a condition that lets the cornea heal, but that it's like a loose bandaid and can be removed again (painfully) when dry or wearing contacts. Same condition prohibits laser surgery.

So glasses are what they are for me, necessary...and I take them off usually to practice with blurry vision.

On a different note, a couple of people I know who had Lasik done had their eyes slowly returned to their preivious levels of visual acuity. It may not be a permanent solution for some...or many.

Never knew that bud. How do you spar? Does head contact cause it to worsen? Not trying to derail the thread, just curious.

18-wheeler drivers that don't move over going up hills.

I certainly enjoy going from 70mph to 30mph or so.

Health plans that don't adequately cover dental or eyeglasses.

I can't afford to get a new pair, and in order to train I've been wearing the same set of one-day disposable contacts for the past year.

Carelessness.

A few minutes ago, I stepped outside, hoping for some fresh air. What I found instead was a nifty little fire in the trash can out there.

Someone had tossed a lit cigarette in the ashtray, and good ol' Z had to bust out with the fire extinguisher.

Try having to train with the damn things. I have 20/500 vision in one eye, 20/250 in the other. If I wanted to see what the instructor was demonstrating, the glasses had to be on. I ended up wearing an old pair so they could get beaten up and I wouldn't be upset.

I'm also the definition of irony because 20/500 is legally blind, and I'm a TV news photographer

Being a little in the macho-vain vein, I often don't wear my specs unless I'm driving.

One day I was working on a pupet project in a school for mentally and physically disabled children.

I was working with a young teenage girl in a wheelchair (she was in it, not me). She was helping me make a giant skeleton from newspaper and sticky tape. As we tried to make the skull it didn't work as well as I'd have liked. She noted my disappointment.

"What's wrong?"

"Oh, it just hasn't turned out how I'd have liked it",

"Oh, that'll be my fault then" (a bit of self-deprecating humour on her part)

"Oh no!" says an oh-so-sensitive-and-PC Trev, "No, it's mine!"

"Oh really? How's that?" (knowing damn well when she was being patronised)

"Errrm" (Trev activates squirm-mode), "EWrrrm, it's because I misjudged the size"

"How?" (twisting the knife with glee)

"Errrm, I'm not wearing my glasses"

"Oh? Why not?"

Trev looks around at the kids in wheelchairs and mechanical aids...

"Errrm, I don't like wearing them..."

"Well you should... nobody'll laugh at you here" (killer punch!)

The squelch of Trev being squashed must have been heard for miles!

I've been wearing glasses since I started university 3 years ago. It's annoying but you get used to it. You can buy special spray bottles with liquid for cleaning them but washing them with regular soap is supposedly good enough. I just give mine a wipe with a lint-free cotton cloth every so often.

Contact lenses are so much higher maintenance but I prefer wearing contacts in social situations because I look better without glasses on.

I can't wear contacts. I once tried to get the optician to put them in and I was writhing on the couch like I was at the dentist! Never did get them in!

Hey Trev, next time have him put them in your EYES! Sheesh! Of course you're going to squirm if he puts them there!
