Just a poll to get an idea about how flexible the average martial artist is. I am at about 11 now, a long way from my goal.
How far from the ground on side splits (in inches)
Only one choice allowed

Side splits I can get fairly close, within 6 inches or so, last time I checked. Front splits......not even close.

I dont know for sure. But I figure I am between 4-6 inches. Before football season, I was at aout 2 inches. I should be able to get there soon enough.
Like most people and Matt, I am not even close with the front splits. I just hate them

I can do the splits no problem, but I still don't understand why so many Martial Artists put a prize on it.

I think its more like a checkpoint thing. Achieving a split, gives you more hope to become an even better martial artist. Its definately a goal to most martial artists out there.

Why?

It doesn't have any functional use for kicking, so why bother?

Little girls who have never been in a Martial arts class can do the splits - do you think this gives them more hope of being a better Martial Artist?

Funny there is such a prize on it, when its so easy to achieve when you train correctly.

That's funny, I still can't come close on center slpits but I am almost to the ground on front splits.

The ability to do the side spits is not a measure of fighting ability. But is is an area that one can make measurable results and improvement.

There is some martial benefit to increased flexibility and also the COOL factor.
