Oh I seem to do that a lot when my friends just like slap box. Yeah that does seem to help a lot. I dont even know why I dont do that when I spar at kungfu but I will remember to next time. Thanks for reminding me

They were too fast to redirect and definately to fast to catch.

No. Not trying to offend you or put you down. But, they weren't. You just aren't fast enough yet to perform the technique. It takes practice and timing. I'm not fast by nature, in fact I'm pretty slow. But, in kick defense, I've learned to move in and catch even really fast front leg kicks with proper technique. I've seen it work on world class TKD fighters so I'm sure it will work on your classmate. Just takes proper technique. It will always take longer to lift a leg, chamber it, and throw a side kick than it does to slide in and simply rotate your hip. Simple body mechanics. More complex action = longer execution time.

It didn't work for me either for quite some time. It requires commitment to the move from the start and lots of practice.

Yes your right, it was me that couldnt catch it. I would have to spend more time against him to get used to it. But he was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do as well as a teacher in Muay Thai so his kicks are powerful and fast. Like you said though they werent too fast to catch.

I had a class of extremely good fighters at one point. Then had a former TKD black belt join. Because he was big and kicked hard all of a sudden my red belts were backing away and getting killed by his kicks. They knew better, but couldn't get past their fear. It doesn't matter how hard or fast they kick if you're not there to recieve it. I acutally had to spar with this guy one night while I was still injured just to show them it wasn't something to fear. I'm shorter than my redbelts by 4-6" and at the time had an extra 30 lbs. or so due to the lack of training from injury. He landed very few kicks on me and I threw him several times in a short period. ( despite my poor condition at the time )

After that, my red belts seemed to do much better against him. I didn't post this to brag about myself because it wasn't anything that spectacular. The point is, it's that fear of getting kicked and low confidence in the technique that causes you to hesitate. As a result the technique doesn't work. Take his kicks away from him then you will have that advantage instead of him. Take his spirit instead of letting him take yours. Take away his weapons and he has to fight your fight.

Did Kimo just advocate going to the floor?!

Actually I advocated knocking his nuts into his throat. Besides this is point sparring, and the rules dictate the action.:)

Good point JMW. Yes so I got to be confident and have high spirits. I wont be scared so I will try everything you guys say. Its just sparring I wont get killed.

Kimo-
Actually our sparring isnt point sparring. It just goes on until were stopped. Would this change what you wanted me to do or is it still good to do?

Still a good move, you just might get pummeled after you do it. But from the sounds of it you are gettting pummeled anyway.

In a more complete version, this technique would need to be followed up with a sweep or a leg takedown. You could also roll out of it and regain your feet, it really depends on what he does.

K next question.

My friend likes to spar with me, just for the fun of it. He is about 210-220 and I am 145 so there is a difference in our sizes. He is the strongest of my friends.
When we spar I dont kick because well I just dont want to because were usually with other people just hanging out.
Any advice on how to block really powerful and fast blows? Like what type of blocks. I throw him off doing pai lum attacks with the wrists, and are very circular motion.

Luckily though I am the only person that friends go I wonder who would win in a fight.... but no one will ever know

i would suggest a strong inside block with the forearm. nail his arm as he comes in and go in and down. thats the important part with stronger opponents. if you just block down, they will punch through it and just hit you lower than they aimed for, but if you go in and down, you can move it past your body. its all timing though, you have to be able to see his punch coming. and we are always taught to counter after a block. never just block. so go ahead and wack him while youve got him crossed up.
