Depending on the level of illustrations and such, you can find a copy of The Book of Five Rings for as little as about 6 dollars. There have been several copies on the bargain book shelf at Barnes and Noble lately. The words are the same, just some pictures are prettier than others

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I am sure many of us will be interested to hear some examples?

Okay. Here are some passasges which contain concepts that could easily be translated to individual combat:

The Way of War is
A Way of Deception.

When able,
Feign inability; [....]

When near,
Appear far;

When far,
Appear near.

Lure with bait;

Strike with chaos.

If the enemy is full,
Be prepared,
If strong,
Avoid him.

If he is angry,
Disconcert him.

If he is weak,
Stir him to pride.

If he is relaxed,
Harry him;

If his men are harmonious,
Split them.

Attack
Where he is
Unprepared;
Appear
Where you are
Unexpected. (1.)

Also, almost all of chapter three, "Form and Dispositions",
can easily be applied.

Also, another favorite of mine:

The Skillful Warrior
Avoids the keen spirit,
Attacks the dull
And the homesick;
This is
Mastery of Spirit.

He confronts chaos
discipline;
He treats tumult
With calm.
This is Mastery of Mind.

He meets distance
With closeness;
He meets exhaustion
With ease;
He meets hunger
With plenty;
This is
Mastery of Strength

[.....]

Do not swallow
A bait.
Do not thwart
A returning army.

Leave a passage
For a besieged army.

Do not press
An enemy at Bay.

This is
The Art of War.(2.)

These are just a few of many. These are the quotes that really speak to me, as I find alot of parallel in the heiho of the waza of Hakuho Ryu (that I have learned so far).
